एक गांव में एक गरीब ब्राह्मण और उसकी पत्नी दोनों रहते थे । वह भगवान में बहुत विश्वास रखते थे । उन दोनों की कोई संतान नहीं थी । वें अपना जीवन बहुत ही नियमित रूप से जीते थे । वह हर रोज मंदिर में जाकर भगवान से प्रार्थना करते कि भगवान उनके घर में एक संतान उत्पन्न हो जाए  । इसी कारण से बहुत दुखी और परेशान भी थे । एक दिन भगवान ने प्रसन्न होकर उन्हें दर्शन दिए और कहा कि मैं तुम्हारी पूजा और भक्ति से बहुत प्रसन्न हूं । मांगों, तुम्हें क्या चाहिए ? तब गरीब ब्राह्मण और उसकी पत्नी बोली कि हे भगवान । हमारी कोई संतान नहीं है , इसलिए हमें संतान प्राप्ति का वर दो । तब भगवान बोले कि मैं तुम्हें अपनी और से कुछ और देना चाहता हूं । दोनों ने खुशी-खुशी हां कह दी । तब भगवान ने उन्हें एक शेर , एक बिल्ली और एक कौवा दिया और कहा कि तुम दोनों इन तीनों को अपने बच्चे के समान ही प्यार करना । और उनका पालन पोषण करना । गरीब ब्राह्मण और उसकी पत्नि  ने भगवान का आशीर्वाद समझ कर उन तीनों को अपने घर ले गए और उनका पालन पोषण करने लगे । जब गांव वालों ने देखा कि भगवान ने उन्हें बच्चे के स्थान पर एक शेर का बच्चा , एक बिल्ली का बच्चा और एक कौवा दिया है ,तो वह सब उनकी हंसी उड़ाने लगे । लेकिन ब्राह्मण और उसकी पत्नी को इस बात से कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता था । वह तो इसे भगवान का आशीर्वाद समझ कर उन तीनों का  पालन पोषण कर रहे थे । उन तीनों में भगवान की कृपा से बहुत ही अद्भुत शक्ति थी । कौआ उड़ते उड़ते ऊपर स्वर्ग लोक तक जा सकता था । एक दिन कौआ उड़ते उड़ते स्वर्ग लोक पहुंचा और वहां एक पेड़ पर जाकर बैठ गया । जब वह पेड़ पर बैठा हुआ था तो उसके कान में कुछ आवाज आई । जहां उसने सुना कि भगवान कह रहे हैं कि इस बार उस गरीब ब्राह्मण के गांव में अकाल पड़ने वाला है । भगवान ने अपनी शक्ति से बहुत सारे चूहों को प्रकट किया और कहा कि तुम उस गरीब ब्राह्मण के गांव में जाकर सारी फसल को नष्ट कर दो । जिससे कि वहां पर अकाल पड़ जाए । कौए ने जब यह बात सुनी तो वह उड़ कर जल्दी-जल्दी अपने घर आया और यह बात उसने ब्राह्मण और ब्राह्मण की पत्नी को बताई । जब यह बात कौवा उस ब्राह्मण को बता रहा था , तभी गांव के एक आदमी ने खिड़की से उन्हें यह बात करते सुन लिया । और जाकर यह बात सारे गांव में फैला दी । गांव वाले इस समस्या के समाधान के लिए उस गरीब ब्राह्मण के पास आए । तब बिल्ली बोली कि तुम सब घबराओ मत , चूहों से तो मैं निपट लूंगी । तुम सब इसकी चिंता मत करो । बिल्ली जाकर पहले से ही वहां तैयार हो गई और जैसे ही चूहे आए और फसल को नष्ट करने लगे , तो बिल्ली ने उन चूहों को मारना शुरू कर दिया । कुछ चूहे मर गए , कुछ घायल हो गए और कुछ डर के मारे भाग गए । गांव वालों ने यह सब देखा तो बहुत खुश हुए और उस बिल्ली का और ब्राह्मण  का धन्यवाद किया । कौवा एक दिन फिर से उड़ता उड़ता स्वर्ग लोक पहुंचा । वहां उसने फिर भगवान को बात करते सुना  कि इन इंसानों ने तो चूहों वाली योजना को विफल कर दिया है ।लेकिन अब हिरणों के झुंड को भेजते हैं , जिनकी वजह से उनकी फसल नष्ट हो जाएगी। कौआ यह बात सुनकर वापस धरती पर आ गया और जाकर ब्राह्मण और गांव वालों से यह बात कही । गांव वाले इस बात को सुनकर परेशान हो गए और कहने लगे कि अब इस समस्या का समाधान कैसे होगा । हिरनो से हम अपनी फसल को कैसे बचाएंगे ?  तब शेर बोला कि घबराओ मत , हिरनो से तो मैं निपट लूंगा । तुम इस बात की चिंता मत करो । अगले दिन शेर खेत में पहुंच गया और जैसे ही हिरण आए तो उसने हिरनो को मारना शुरू कर दिया । कुछ हिरन घायल हो गए और कुछ डर के मारे भाग गए  । गांवों वाले ने शेर का धन्यवाद किया और अपने घर चले गए । अगले दिन जब कौवा उड़ता उड़ता फिर स्वर्ग लोक पहुंचा तो उसने भगवान को फिर से कहते सुना कि यह गांव वाले तो बहुत ही चालाक और तेज हैं । तभी वहां पर देवी लक्ष्मी आ गई और भगवान को परेशान देखकर बोली कि हे भगवान आप परेशान क्यों है ? भगवान ने कहा कि इन गांव वालों की चतुरता के सामने  हमारी  सारी योजना विफल हो रही हैं । तभी देवी लक्ष्मी बोली कि हे भगवान , है तो इंसान ही ना , हमसे बढ़कर और आप से बढ़कर नहीं हो सकते । क्यों ना हम  इनके अनाज की पैदावार को ही कम कर दें । यदि हम एक खलिहान में  एक क्विंटल से ज्यादा ना होने दें । तो फिर यह अनाज कम होने की वजह से अपने आप ही अकाल पड़ जाएगा । कोवे ने यह बात सुनी और जाकर के गांव वालों और गरीब ब्राह्मण को बताई । तब गांव वाले  परेशान हो गए और कहा कि इस तरह से तो गांव में अकाल पड़ जाएगा ,अगर खेत में अन्न कम हुआ तो । तब गरीब ब्राह्मण ने योजना बनाई और कहा कि क्यों ना हम बहुत सारे खलिहान बनाए । अपने खेतों को बहुत सारे खलियान में बांट दें । एक खलिहान में 1 क्विंटल अनाज होगा तो इससे बहुत सारे खलिहानो में बहुत सारा अनाज इकट्ठा हो जाएगा । गांव वालों ने ऐसा ही किया । गांव वालों ने बहुत से खलियान तैयार कर दिए जिससे बहुत सारा अनाज इकट्ठा हो गया। गांव वाले बहुत ही खुश हुए । गांव वालों ने जाकर मंदिर में दान दक्षिणा दी , पूजा हवन इत्यादि करवाएं और भगवान का धन्यवाद किया । भगवान ऊपर स्वर्ग लोक में यह सब देख कर मुस्कुरा रहे थे । क्योंकि जो सब हो रहा था भगवान की माया से ही हो रहा था । कौए के  कानों में जो आवाज सुनाई पड़ी थी  भगवान ही उसे ये आवाज सुनाना चाहते थे । क्योंकि भगवान उन्हें यह बताना चाहते थे कि अगर गांव वाले सब मिलकर आपस में किसी समस्या का समाधान निकालेंगे तो फिर  भगवान तो क्या हर बुरे इंसान को हरा सकेंगे । इसलिए आदमी को एक दूसरे का सहायक होना चाहिए । एक दूसरे की मिलकर मदद करनी चाहिए । जिस से आने वाली समस्या का सामना कर सके । भगवान ने  उन्हें आशीर्वाद दिया और कहा कि तुम्हारे गांव में कभी भी अकाल नहीं पड़ेगा । तुम सब इसी तरह मिल जुल कर रहो । गांव वालों ने ब्राह्मण के शेर , बिल्ली और कौवे को धन्यवाद दिया ।और अब कोई भी गांव वाला उनकी हंसी नहीं उड़ाता था बल्कि उन तीनों पर गर्व करता था । बल्कि भगवान की कृपा से कुछ समय बाद ब्राह्मण के एक पुत्र पैदा हुआ । ब्राह्मण बहुत खुश हुआ । उसने भगवान का धन्यवाद किया और वे सब साथ में खुशी-खुशी रहने लगे ।

When the villagers saw that God had given them a lion cub, a kitten and a crow in place of the child, they all laughed at them. But the Brahmin and his wife did not care about this. Considering it as a blessing of God, he was nurturing all three of them. All three of them had amazing power by the grace of God. The crow could fly up to the heavens while flying. One day the crow reached heaven while flying and sat on a tree there. While he was sitting on the tree, some sound came in his ear. Where he heard that God is saying that this time there is going to be a famine in the village of that poor Brahmin. God manifested many rats with his power and said that you go to that poor Brahmin's village and destroy the whole crop. So that there would be a famine there. When the crow heard this, he flew to his house hurriedly and told this to the brahmin and the brahmin's wife. When the crow was telling this thing to the Brahmin, then a man from the village overheard him talking through the window. And went and spread this word in the whole village. The villagers came to that poor Brahmin to solve this problem. Then the cat said that you all do not panic, I will deal with the rats. Don't worry about it all. The cat went there and got ready already and as soon as the rats came and started destroying the crop, the cat started killing those rats. Some rats died, some got injured and some ran away in fear. When the villagers saw all this, they were very happy and thanked the cat and the Brahmin. One day the crow flew again and flew to heaven. There he again heard God talking that these humans had foiled the rats' plan. But now he sends a herd of deer, due to which his crop will be destroyed. Hearing this, the crow came back to earth and went and told this to the Brahmins and the villagers. The villagers got upset after hearing this and started saying that how will this problem be solved now. How do we save our crops from deer? Then the lion said that do not panic, I will deal with the deer. Don't you worry about this. The next day the lion reached the field and as soon as the deer came, it started killing the deer. Some deer got injured and some ran away in fear. The villagers thanked the lion and went to their homes. The next day, when the crow flew away and then reached heaven, he heard God again saying that these villagers are very clever and fast. Then Goddess Lakshmi came there and seeing God upset, she said, Oh God, why are you upset? God said that all our plans are failing in front of the cleverness of these villagers. Then Goddess Lakshmi said that oh God, then not only human beings, they cannot be greater than us and more than you. Why don't we just reduce their grain yield? If we do not allow more than one quintal in a barn. Then because of the scarcity of this grain, there will automatically be a famine. Kove heard this and went and told the villagers and the poor Brahmin. Then the villagers got upset and said that in this way there will be a famine in the village, if there is less food in the field. Then the poor brahmin made a plan and said that why don't we build a lot of barns. Divide your fields into several barns. If there is 1 quintal of grain in one barn, then it will collect a lot of grain in many barns. The villagers did the same. The villagers prepared many khyans from which a lot of grain was collected. The villagers were very happy. The villagers went and donated dakshina to the temple, got the worship done, havan etc. and thanked God. God was smiling seeing all this in heaven. Because all that was happening was happening only because of the Maya of God. The voice that was heard in the crow's ears, only God wanted to narrate this voice to him. Because God wanted to tell them that if all the villagers together find a solution to any problem, then will God be able to defeat every bad person. Therefore man should be helpful to each other. We should help each other together. So that you can face the problem. God blessed him and said that there will never be a famine in your village. You all live together like this. The villagers thanked the lion, the cat and the crow of the brahmin.

एक बार भोले बाबा और मां पार्वती पृथ्वी पर घूमने के लिए निकले । जैसे ही भोले बाबा और मां पार्वती पृथ्वी पर पहुंचे तो भोले बाबा ने मां पार्वती से कहा – कि पार्वती ,तुम पृथ्वी लोक पर किसी भी मनुष्य की दुख तकलीफ को देखकर विचलित मत होना । क्योंकि जो भी कोई यहां सुख और दुख प्राप्त करता  हैं , वो सबको अपने कर्म अनुसार ही मिलता है । पार्वती मां ने हां कह दी और वे दोनों पृथ्वी पर घूमने लगे । घूमते – घूमते  एक गांव में पहुंचे । उस गांव में एक घर में उन्होंने देखा कि एक सास अपनी बहू को डांट रही है और कह रही है कि गरीब परिवार की हमारे घर में पता नहीं कहां से आ गई है ? हमारी किस्मत फूटी थी , जो हमने गरीब परिवार से नाता जोड़ लिया । ना तो दहेज में कुछ लाई और ना ही इसके मां और पिता कुछ सामान वगैरह देकर जाते हैं । त्यौहार पर कुछ भी सामान नहीं लाते । तब बहू बोली कि सासू मां ,मेरी मां बहुत बीमार है और उन्हीं की दवाइयों पर सारा पैसा खर्च हो जाता है । मेरे पिताजी जब तक मुझे दे सकते थे , तब तक उन्होंने मुझे दिया । और अब सारा धन दवाइयों पर और घर खर्च में चला जाता है । इसलिए मेरे पिताजी कुछ नहीं दे पाते । मेरी मां बहुत बीमार है और मेरे पिताजी आज मुझे लेने के लिए आ रहे हैं । आप अनुमति दें ,तो  क्या मैं अपने पिता के साथ चली जाऊं ? सास बोली – नहीं ,नहीं कहीं मत जाना , यहीं पर रहो । फिर घर का काम कौन करेगा ? थोड़ी ही देर में बहू के पिता वहां पर आ जाते हैं और हाथ जोड़कर कहते हैं कि समधन जी , मेरी बेटी को मेरे साथ भेज दीजिए ।

 बस एक दिन की बात है इसकी मां बहुत बीमार है और इसे देखना चाहती है । सास ने कहा – ठीक है एक दिन के लिए ले जाओ । लेकिन कल शाम को मैं अपने बेटे को भेजूंगी और इसे वापस भेज देना । दोनों पिता और बेटी चल दिए । वहां जाकर बेटी ने देखा कि उसकी मां बहुत बीमार है और उसका नाम बार-बार ले रही है । वह अपनी मां के पास जाती है और पूछती है कि मां कैसी हो ? उसकी मां बोली बेटी तुम आ गई । मैं कब से तुम से मिलना चाहती थी । अब तुम्हें देख लिया ,अब मैं चैन से मर सकूंगी । बेटी बोली नहीं मां , ऐसी बात मत करो ,अभी तो आपको और जीना है । भैया और भाभी कहां पर है ? तभी उसके भैया और भाभी आ जाते हैं । वह अपने भैया और भाभी के गले लगती है । शाम हो जाती है उसका भैया अपनी पत्नी से कहता है कि  मेरी बहन बहुत दिनों बाद मायके आई है , तुम उसके लिए कुछ अच्छा सा खाने को बना दो । तभी उसकी पत्नी कहती है कि घर में कुछ नहीं है , मैंने सिर्फ बाजरे की रोटी और चटनी बनाई है । पूरी ,पकवान के लिए घर में सामान नहीं है । तभी उसकी बहन वहां पर आ जाती है और कहती है कि भैया और भाभी ,आप कैसी बातें कर रहे हो । मैं अब भी इसी घर की बेटी हूं । अगर भाभी ने बाजरे की रोटी और चटनी बनाई है , तो मुझे वही बहुत पसंद है । मैं भाभी के हाथ की चटनी और बाजरे की रोटी को कब से तरस रही थी। आज जी भर के खाऊंगी । वह खाना खाती है और देखती है कि उसका पति उसे लेने आया है । उसका पिता कहता है ,  दामाद जी ! आप तो कल आने वाले थे ? फिर इस समय ? क्या बात है? सब ठीक है ना?  पति कहता हैं कि मां की तबीयत बहुत खराब है और उन्होंने आज ही हमे वापस बुलाया है । बेटी मन में सोचती है कि सासु मां तो ठीक थी , फिर अचानक क्या हुआ ? जो उन्होंने मुझे आज ही बुला लिया । लेकिन वह अपने पति से कुछ नहीं कहती और अपने पति के साथ अपनी ससुराल चली जाती है । वहां जाकर देखती है कि उसकी सास बैठ कर आराम से खाना खा रही है । बहू अपनी सास से कहती है मां जी क्या हुआ ? आप बीमार हो ? सास बोली – नहीं ,नहीं , मैंने तुम्हें ऐसे ही बुलाया था । घर का रात का काम कौन करता ?  इतने सारे बर्तन पड़े थे । बहू बेचारी बहुत परेशान हो जाती है और सोचती है कि मैं एक दिन भी अपने मां और भैया भाभी के साथ नहीं रह पाई । सास कहती है अच्छा यह तो बता , तेरे मायके में तेरे भैया और भाभी ने क्या खातिरदारी की तेरी ? बहु कहती है कि मेरी भाभी ने तो खीर ,पूरी ,कचोरी  और भी पता नहीं क्या-क्या पकवान बनाया था । पेट भर गया पर मन नहीं भरा था खाते-खाते । सास  मन में सोचती है कि देखो , कितना झूठ बोल रही है , गरीब घर की ,इसे कहां पूरी पकवान नसीब हुआ होगा ? कोई बात नहीं ,रात को सोने दो ,इसका पेट का ढक्कन उठाकर देखूंगी कि क्या-क्या खाया इसने । बहू यह कहकर  रसोई का काम करके सोने चली जाती है । रात को उसकी सास चुपके से उसके पेट का ढक्कन उठाकर खोलती है और देखती है कि उसमें तो बाजरे की रोटी और चटनी थी । जब बहू अगली सुबह उठती है तो सास कहती है – तुम तो बहुत झूठ बोलती हो , तुम तो कह रही थी कि पूरी और पकवान खाया था , लेकिन मैंने रात को तेरे पेट का ढक्कन खोल कर देखा , उसमे तो बाजरे की रोटी और चटनी थी । बहू की आंखों में आंसू आ जाते हैं और उसकी सास उसे बहुत फटकार लगाती है और बहुत ही जलील करती है ।  बहू रोती रोती भगवान के सामने जाती है और हाथ जोड़ कर कहती है कि हे भगवान , जैसे मेरे साथ हुआ ऐसा किसी के साथ मत करना । सबकी इज्जत तुम्हारे ही हाथ हैं । हे भोलेनाथ , मैं आपसे हाथ जोड़कर विनती करती हूं कि आज के बाद  किसी के भी पेट का यह ढक्कन ना खुले । ताकि कोई ना जान सके कि किस ने क्या खाया और क्या नही ? भगवान उसकी इस प्रार्थना को स्वीकार कर लेते हैं तब मां पार्वती कहती है कि हे भोलेनाथ , आप यह पेट का ढक्कन हमेशा के लिए बंद कर दो । ताकि भगवान के सिवा कोई भी इंसान ना जान पाए कि किसी का पेट भरा है या खाली है ।  कहते हैं कि उस दिन से भगवान शिव ने पेट का ढक्कन बंद कर दिया था । तब से पेट  का ढक्कन नहीं खुलता ।

When God accepts his prayer, then Mother Parvati says that O Bholenath, you should close the lid of this stomach forever. So that no human being except God can know whether someone's stomach is full or empty. It is said that from that day onwards Lord Shiva had closed the lid of the stomach. Since then the lid of the stomach does not open.

करवा चौथ का व्रत कार्तिक मास की कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्थी को मनाया जाता है इस दिन स्त्रियां अपने पति की लंबी आयु के लिए पूरा दिन निर्जला व्रत रखती हैं और रात को  चांद को देखने के बाद , चांद को अर्घ्य देकर अपने पति का मुख देखने के बाद ही भोजन करती है। तब यह व्रत संपूर्ण होता है।

एक साहूकार के सात लड़के और एक लड़की थी । उसकी लड़की उन दिनों अपने मायके में ही आई हुई थी । साहूकार की पत्नी , उसकी सातों बहुओं और उसकी लड़की ने करवा चौथ का व्रत रखा । साहूकार के लड़के अपनी बहन से बहुत प्यार करते थे ।  साहूकार के लड़के रात के समय जब भोजन करने बैठे तो उन्होंने अपनी बहन से कहा कि – "आओ बहन , भोजन कर लो " । परंतु उसकी बहन ने भोजन करने के लिए मना कर दिया और कहा कि आज मेरा करवा चौथ का व्रत है । रात में चांद देखने के बाद ही मैं भोजन करूंगी । तब बहन की यह बात सुनकर उसके भाइयों से रहा नहीं गया और उन्होंने गांव से दूर एक पेड़ के ऊपर चढ़कर लकड़ी में आग जलाकर और उसका प्रकाश छलनी में से अपनी बहन को दिखाते हुए कहा कि बहन , चांद तो निकल आया है । चांद को अर्घ्य दे दो और भोजन कर लो । उसकी बहन ने अपनी भाभियों से कहा कि भाभी देखो चांद निकल आया है । तुम भी चांद को देखकर अर्घ दे दो और भोजन शुरू कर दो । उसकी भाभियों ने कहा कि नहीं , जीजी। आपके भाई आपके साथ छल कर रहे हैं । यह चांद नहीं है ,चांद को निकलने में अभी समय है ।लेकिन उसने अपनी भाभियों की बात नहीं मानी । वह भूख से बहुत व्याकुल हो चुकी थी ।उसे अपने भाईयों द्वारा दिखाएं गए प्रकाश को ही चांद समझकर उसे अर्ध्य दे दिया और भोजन करने बैठ गई । जैसे ही उसने पहला टुकड़ा तोड़ा तो उसे छींक आ गई , दूसरा टुकड़ा तोड़ते ही उसमें बाल निकल आया । और जैसे ही वह अगला टुकड़ा तोड़कर खाने लगी तभी उसकी ससुराल से बुलावा आया कि –" उसका पति बहुत बीमार है " । उसे तुरंत अपने ससुराल जाना होगा । साहूकारनी अपनी बेटी के ससुराल जाने की तैयारी करने लगी । जैसे ही साहूकारनी ने बक्सा खोला उसमें पहले काले रंग के कपड़े दिखाई दिए , फिर जैसे दूसरा बक्सा खोला उसमें सारे कपड़े सफेद रंग के थे । तब बेटी बोली कि –  मां तुम रहने दो । मैं ऐसे ही चली जाऊंगी । जब बेटी चलने को तैयार थी तब उसकी मां ने कहा कि "बेटी , जब तुम जाओ और रास्ते में कोई तुम्हें बुजुर्ग दिखाई दे तो उसके पैर छूना और जब वें तुम्हें बूढ़ सुहागन होने का आशीर्वाद दे तो तभी पल्ले में एक गांठ बांध लेना । बेटी ने कहा – ठीक है मां और वह अपनी ससुराल के लिए चल पड़ी । रास्ते में जो भी उसे बुजुर्ग मिलता , तो वह सब के पैर छूती और सब उसे आशीर्वाद देते कि खुश रहो ,पीहर का सुख देखो । पर किसी के मुख से उसे बूढ़ सुहागन होने का आशीर्वाद  नहीं निकला जैसे तैसे वह अपने ससुराल पहुंच गई । जब वह अपने ससुराल पहुंची तो उसकी छोटी ननंद घर के बाहर खेल रही थी । उसने अपनी ननंद के पैर छुए तो ननंद के मुख से निकला – सदा सौभाग्यवती रहो ,पुत्रवती रहो और बूढ़ सुहागन रहो । यह सुनते ही उसने अपने पल्ले में गांठ बांध ली । जब वह घर के अंदर पहुंची तो उसने देखा कि उसका पति मर चुका है और उसे नीचे अर्थी पर लिटा रखा है ।  सब उसे ले जाने की तैयारी कर रहे हैं । वह बहुत रोई और बहुत जोर से चिल्लाने लगी । जैसे ही लोग उसकी अर्थी को ले जाने लगे , वह रोती और चिल्लाती हुई जोर से बोली कि – नहीं मैं इन्हीं नहीं जाने दूंगी । लेकिन जब सब नहीं माने तो वह बोली कि मैं भी इनके साथ ही जाऊंगी और बार-बार यही कह रही थी कि मैं भी इनके साथ ही जाऊंगी । सब बोले कि ठीक है ,ले चलो इसे भी साथ में । जब वहां श्मशान में सब लोग उसके पति को जलाने लगे तब वह बोली कि – मैं इन्हें जलाने नहीं दूंगी । तो वहां पर खड़े लोगों को गुस्सा आ गया और बोले कि पहले तो अपने पति को खा गई और अब इसकी मिट्टी को भी खराब करना चाहती है । लेकिन वो नहीं मानी । और कहने लगी कि मैं इन्हें नहीं जलाने दूंगी । अगर तुम लोगों ने इन्हें जलाया , तो तुम्हें पहले मुझ में आग लगानी होगी । तब परिवार के सदस्यों और बड़े  बुजुर्गों ने निर्णय किया कि – ठीक है , इसे इसके पति के शरीर के साथ ही यही छोड़ दो और इसकी एक झोपड़ी भी यही बनवा दो । ये यही अपने पति के साथ रह लेगी । साहूकार की बेटी अपने मुर्दा पति के साथ वही झोपड़ी में रहने लगी । वह अपने पति के शरीर की साफ सफाई करती । उसकी छोटी ननंद आकर उसको दिन में दो समय खाना दे जाती । वह हर मास की चतुर्थी को व्रत करती थी , चांद को अर्घ्य देती और ज्योत उठाती। जब चौथ माता आती तो कहती करवो ले करवो ले , भाइयों की प्यारी बहन करवो ले, घनी भूखारी करवो ले । वह चौथ माता से अपने पति के प्राण मांगती । तब चौथ माता  उसे कहती थी जब हमसे बड़ी चौथ आएगी तुम उनसे अपने पति के प्राण मांगना । ऐसा करते करते सभी चौथ माता आती और उससे यही कहती कि जब हमसे बड़ी चौथ आएगी तब तुम उनसे अपने पति के प्राण मांगना । ऐसा करते करते समय बीतने लगा । आश्विन मास की चौथ माता आई और उससे बोली कि तुझसे कार्तिक मास की चौथ माता नाराज हैं । वही तुझे तेरा सुहाग दे सकती हैं ,जब कार्तिक मास की चौथ माता आए तो तुम उनके पैर मत छोड़ना । कार्तिक मास की चौथ आने से पहले उसने अपनी छोटी ननंद से सोलह श्रृंगार का पूरा सामान मंगवाया और करवा भी मंगवाया। छोटी ननंद ने घर जा कर यह बात अपनी मां को बताई तब सास बोली कि लगता है मेरी बहू बेटे के गम में जाने के बाद पागल हो गई है । और अपनी बेटी से बोली कि जा अपनी भाभी को जो भी मांगती है वह सामान दे दे। ननंद श्रृंगार का सारा सामान अपनी भाभी को दे आई । साहूकार की बेटी ने  करवा चौथ का व्रत रखा और चांद को देखकर अर्घ्य दिया और करवाचौथ माता की जोत उठाई। जब चौथ माता प्रकट हुई तो माता बोली करवो ले करवो ले , सात भाइयों की प्यारी बहन करवो ले ,दिन में चांद उगाने वाली करवो ले ,  घणी भूखारी करवो ले । तब वह बोली माता मेरा सुहाग मुझे वापस कर दो तब चौथ माता बोली – तू तो बहुत भूखी है , सात भाइयों की प्यारी बहन है , तुझे सुहाग से क्या काम । तब साहूकार की बेटी बोली – नहीं ,माता नहीं , मैं आपके पैर तब तक नहीं छोडूंगी । जब तक आप मेरा सुहाग मुझे वापस नहीं लौटा देती।  चौथ माता ने उससे सुहाग का सारा सामान मांगा । तो उसने एक एक करके सारा सामान माता को दे दिया ।  चौथ माता ने अपनी आंखों से काजल निकाला , नाखूनों से मेहंदी निकाली और मांग से सिंदूर निकाला और छीटकी उंगली का छींटा दिया और उसका पति जीवित हो गया  । जाते-जाते चौथ माता उसकी झोपड़ी पर लात मार गई , जिससे उसकी झोपड़ी महल बन गई । जब छोटी ननंद अगले दिन खाना लेकर आई तो उसने देखा भाभी की झोपड़ी की जगह तो महल खड़ा है । ननंद को देखते ही साहूकार की बेटी दौड़े-दौड़े अपने ननंद के पास आई और कहा कि देखो , जीजी आपका भाई वापस आ गया । घर जाकर सासु मां से कहो कि हमें गाजे-बाजे के साथ वापस लेने आए । ननंद दौड़ी-दौड़ी अपनी मां के पास जाकर बोली – मां , मां भाई जिंदा हो गया , तब मां बोली कि तेरी भाभी के साथ साथ तेरा भी दिमाग खराब हो गया है  ।नहीं मां , मैंने देखा है ,भाई सच में जिंदा हो गया है । भाभी ने गाजे-बाजे के साथ हमें बुलाया है । सभी घरवाले गाजे-बाजे के साथ अपने बेटे को लेने पहुंचे तो बेटे को जिंदा देखकर सास बहुत खुश हुई। बहू ने अपनी सास के पैर छुए और बोली देखो मां ,आपका बेटा वापस आ गया । सास बोली –मैंने तो साल भर पहले ही इसे अपने घर से भेज दिया था ,वह तो तू ही है,जो इसे वापस लाई है । तब सास अपनी बहू और बेटे को खुशी-खुशी अपने साथ घर लिवा ले गई ।

एक गरीब भिखारी था । वह हर रोज भीख मांगता था और जो भी पैसे या खाना मिलता  वह उसे अपनी झोपड़ी में  ले जाता और अपनी पत्नी के साथ बांटकर खाता था । उस भिखारी की कोई संतान नहीं थी । भिखारी की पत्नी बीमार होने की वजह से एक टूटी हुई खाट पर ही पड़ी रहती थी ।एक दिन की बात है वह भिखारी  एक अमीर व्यक्ति के घर के दरवाजे पर जाकर भीख मांगता है । तो वह अमीर व्यक्ति उस भिखारी को गालियां देता है और बोलता है कि – जाओ यहां से, मेरे पास तुम्हें देने के लिए फालतू पैसे नहीं है । तुम यहां कमा कर नहीं रख गए हो ,जो मैं तुम्हें भीख दूं । और कभी-कभी वह अमीर आदमी उस भिखारी को धक्का भी दे देता । मगर वह गरीब भिखारी बस इतना ही कहता कि भगवान तुम्हारे पापों को क्षमा करें । और वहां से चला जाता । दूसरे दिन भी वह भिखारी उस अमीर व्यक्ति के घर के दरवाजे पर जाकर भीख मांगता है ।  उस दिन उस अमीर व्यक्ति का अपनी पत्नी से झगड़ा हो जाता है और वह उस कारण बहुत गुस्से में होता है । जब वह भिखारी उससे भीख मांगता है तो वह गुस्से में आकर उस भिखारी का सिर एक पत्थर से फोड़ देता है । उस भिखारी के सिर से खून निकलने लगता है ।  मगर तब भी वह भिखारी इतना ही बोला कि भगवान तुम्हारे पापों को क्षमा करें । और आगे चला जाता है । उस अमीर व्यक्ति का जब गुस्सा कम हुआ तो वह सोचने लगा कि मैंने उस भिखारी को पत्थर से मारा फिर भी उसने मुझे कुछ भी ना कह कर मेरे लिए भगवान से दुआ मांगी । आखिर इस भिखारी के अंदर इतना संतोष कैसे है ?  मुझे यह सब जानना होगा । उसके अंदर यह सब जानने की  उत्सुकता बढ़ गई । फिर वह अमीर व्यक्ति उस भिखारी को ढूंढता ढूंढता फिरता है । उसे वह भिखारी एक घर के सामने भीख मांगता दिखाई देता है । वह अमीर आदमी उस भिखारी का पीछा करता है । वह भिखारी जहां जहां जाता वहां वहां वह अमीर व्यक्ति भी जाने लगा ।तब वह अमीर व्यक्ति देखता है कि कोई उस भिखारी को गालियां देता और कुछ लोग उस भिखारी को जलील करते । मगर भिखारी उन सब को इतना ही कहता कि भगवान तुम्हारे पापों को क्षमा करें । भिखारी जब अपनी झोपड़ी में वापस लौट रहा था । वह अमीर व्यक्ति भी उसके पीछे पीछे जा रहा था । भिखारी ने जैसे ही अपनी झोपड़ी में प्रवेश किया तो उसकी बीमार पत्नी उठ खड़ी हुई । उसका भीख का कटोरा देखने लगी तो उस  कटोरे में केवल एक ही रोटी थी । तब भिखारी की पत्नी बोली कि बस एक ही रोटी। और आपके सिर पर यह खून कैसे निकल रहा है ? आपको यह चोट कैसे लगी ?  तब भिखारी बोला कि आज के लिए एक रोटी ही है । सब ने मुझे बहुत गालियां दी और पत्थर मारे जिसकी वजह से यह खून निकला  है । यह सब हमारे पापों का फल है । तुम्हें याद है कि कुछ साल पहले हम भी अमीर हुआ करते थे । हमारे पास बहुत सारी धन दौलत थी । उस धन दौलत पर हमें बहुत अभिमान था । और वह लंगड़ा भिखारी जिसे हम बहुत परेशान करते थे । जब वह हमारे घर के दरवाजे पर भीख मांगने आता था तो हम उसे कितना सुनाते थे और ना ही उसे भीख देते थे । और तो और उसकी लाठी छीन कर उसको नीचे गिरा दिया करते थे । वो जमीन पर पड़ा हुआ कहता था कि मेरी लाठी मुझे दे दो , मैं इसके बिना चल नहीं पाऊंगा । लेकिन हम उसे उसकी लाठी नहीं देते थे और उसे ऐसा ही पड़ा हुआ देखकर खूब हंसते थे । अपने घर के कुत्तों को उसके पीछे छोड़ देते थे । एक बार तो हमने उसके भीख का कटोरा भी फेंक दिया था ।तब वो कहता था कि तुम्हारे पापों का हिसाब भगवान करेगा । मुझे लगता है कि हमें उसे लंगड़े भिखारी की बद्दुआ लग गई है और अब भगवान हमारे पापों का हिसाब कर रहा है । हमारी फैक्ट्री में जो आग लगी थी लगता है वह उस लंगड़े भिखारी की ही बद्दुआ थी । भिखारी बोला इसलिए मैं कभी भी किसी को बद्दुआ नहीं देता चाहे लोग मुझे कितनी भी गालियां दे या मेरा अपमान करें ।मगर मैं सब को दुआ ही देता रहूंगा ।क्योंकि मैं यह नहीं चाहता कि कोई और भी मेरे जैसे इतने बुरे दिन देखे ।मेरे साथ गलत करने वालों को भी मैं दुआ देता रहूंगा क्योंकि उनको यह मालूम ही नहीं होता कि वे कोई पाप कर रहे हैं ।जैसे हमने किया था। यह बातें वह अमीर व्यक्ति झोपड़ी के बाहर खड़ा होकर सुन रहा था । उसे अब सारी बातें समझ में आ गई ।भिखारी की पत्नी ने जो रोटी भीख में मिली थी वह आधी आधी कर दी और दोनों पति-पत्नी उस आधी –आधी रोटी को खा कर सो गए। अगले दिन वह भिखारी उसी अमीर व्यक्ति के घर के दरवाजे पर जाकर भीख मांगने लगता है ।तब अमीर व्यक्ति ने उसे बहुत सारा खाना दिया और कुछ पैसे भी दिए । भिखारी ने उसे दुआ दी और चला गया ।

After all, how is there so much contentment inside this beggar? I need to know all this. The curiosity to know all this increased in him. Then that rich person goes on searching for that beggar. He sees that beggar begging in front of a house. The rich man follows the beggar. Wherever that beggar went, that rich person also started going there. Then that rich person sees that someone abuses that beggar and some people insult that beggar. But the beggar tells them all only that God forgive your sins. When the beggar was returning to his hut. That rich man was also following him. As the beggar entered his hut, his ailing wife stood up. When she started looking at his begging bowl, there was only one roti in that bowl. Then the beggar's wife said that only one bread. And how is this blood coming out on your head? How did you get this injury? Then the beggar said that there is only one roti for today. Everyone abused me a lot and threw stones because of which this blood has come out. All this is the result of our sins. You remember we used to be rich a few years back too. We had lots of wealth. We were very proud of that wealth. And that lame beggar whom we used to harass a lot. When he used to come to the door of our house to beg, we used to tell him how much and neither did we give him alms. And he used to snatch his sticks and put him down. He used to lie on the ground saying that give me my stick, I will not be able to walk without it. But we did not give him his stick and we used to laugh a lot seeing him lying like this. He used to leave the dogs of his house behind him. Once we even threw his begging bowl. Then he used to say that God will pay for your sins. I think we have got him the bad name of a lame beggar and now God is accounting for our sins. The fire that broke out in our factory seems to have been that lame beggar's gun. The beggar said that's why I never bully anyone, no matter how much people abuse me or insult me. But I will keep praying to everyone. Because I do not want anyone else to see such bad days like me. I will keep praying to those who do wrong because they do not even know that they are committing any sin. Like we did. The rich man was listening to these things standing outside the hut.
