गांधारी गांधार देश के राजा "सुबल " की कन्या थी । इसलिए उसे गांधारी कहा जाता था । गांधारी बचपन से ही शिव जी की भक्ति करती थी । शिव जी ने उन्हें प्रसन्न होकर सौ पुत्रों का वरदान दिया था । गांधारी के एक भाई भी था जिसका नाम शकुनी था । गांधारी का विवाह हस्तिनापुर के राजा महाराज धृतराष्ट्र से हुआ था । धृतराष्ट्र जन्म से ही अंधे थे । विवाह के समय ही गांधारी ने अपनी आंखों पर पट्टी बांध ली थी। क्योंकि उन्होने सोचा कि – जब उनके पति ही इस संसार को नहीं देख सकते , तो उन्हें भी इस संसार को देखने का कोई हक नहीं है । और एक पतिव्रता नारी होने के कारण उन्होंने अपनी आंखों पर पट्टी बांध ली । महारानी गांधारी जब गर्भवती हुई , तो सब बहुत ही खुश थे । धृतराष्ट्र को तो अपने आने वाले युवराज का बेसब्री से इंतजार था । परंतु गांधारी के गर्भ को 2 वर्ष हो चुके थे । परंतु अभी तक उन्हे प्रसव की कोई भी पीड़ा नही हुई थी । उसी समय महारानी कुंती ने वन में युधिष्ठिर को जन्म दिया । इस खबर को सुनते ही धृतराष्ट्र महारानी गांधारी पर क्रोधित होने लगे । और उनसे कहने लगे कि उन्होंने अभी तक किसी पुत्र को जन्म क्यों नहीं दिया । उन्हें तो शिवजी से सौ पुत्रों का वरदान मिला है , फिर अभी तक एक भी पुत्र क्यों पैदा नहीं हुआ । धृतराष्ट्र की ये बातें सुनकर गांधारी को अपने आप पर क्रोध आने लगा । क्रोध में आकर गांधारी ने अपने पेट पर बहुत जोर से मुक्का मारा । जिससे उसके गर्भ से मांस का एक बड़ा सा टुकड़ा निकला । सब यह देखकर आश्चर्य चकित हो गए। तब भगवान वेदव्यास को बुलाया गया और वेदव्यास ने अपनी शक्ति से उस मांस के टुकड़े को 100 भागों में बांटा । और आदेश दिया कि इन्हे अलग-अलग मिट्टी के घड़ों में घी भरकर रखा जाए । और एक वर्ष तक ना खोला जाए । 1 वर्ष के पश्चात उन में से एक मिट्टी के घड़े से एक बालक का जन्म हुआ । अपने जन्म के समय वह बालक गधे की तरह रोने लगा। उसके जन्म लेते ही बुरे अपशकुन होने शुरू हो गए थे । तब विदुर ने धृतराष्ट्र और गांधारी को सलाह दी कि आपका यह बच्चा इस राज्य के लिए विनाशकारी साबित हो सकता है । इसलिए आप इसका त्याग कर दें । परंतु पुत्र मोह में आकर धृतराष्ट्र और गांधारी ने उसका त्याग नहीं किया । उसे गले से लगा लिया । इसके पश्चात उन घड़ों से एक – एक करके 99 बच्चों ने जन्म लिया । और इस तरह गांधारी के सौ पुत्रों का जन्म हुआ । सबसे पहले जन्म लेने वाले पुत्र का नाम दुर्योधन रखा गया। उसके पश्चात गांधारी को फिर से गर्भ ठहरा और उसकी एक पुत्री पैदा हुई । जिसका नाम दुशाला था । दुशाला का विवाह सिंधु देश के राजा जयद्रथ से हुआ था । और महाभारत के युद्ध में अर्जुन के हाथों जयद्रथ की मृत्यु हुई थी ।
Gandhari was the daughter of King Subal of Gandhara country. That's why he was called Gandhari. Gandhari used to worship Lord Shiva since childhood. Shiva ji pleased him and gave him the boon of hundred sons. Gandhari also had a brother named Shakuni. Gandhari was married to King Dhritarashtra of Hastinapur. Dhritarashtra was blind since birth. At the time of marriage, Gandhari had blindfolded her. Because she thought that - when her husband cannot see this world, then she also has no right to see this world. And being a chaste woman, she blindfolded her. When Queen Gandhari became pregnant, everyone was very happy. Dhritarashtra was eagerly waiting for his coming crown prince. But it had been 2 years since Gandhari's pregnancy. But till now she had not felt any pain of childbirth. At the same time, Queen Kunti gave birth to Yudhishthira in the forest. On hearing this news, Dhritarashtra got angry at Queen Gandhari. And started telling them why they have not given birth to any son yet. He has got the boon of a hundred sons from Shiva, then why not a single son was born till now. Hearing these words of Dhritarashtra, Gandhari started getting angry with himself. In anger, Gandhari punched his stomach very hard. Due to which a big piece of meat came out of her womb. Everyone was surprised to see this. Then Lord Ved Vyas was called and Ved Vyas with his power divided that piece of meat into 100 parts. And ordered that they should be kept in separate earthen pots filled with ghee. And don't open for a year. After 1 year, a child was born from one of them from an earthen pot. At the time of his birth, the boy started crying like a donkey. Bad omens started happening as soon as he was born. Then Vidura advised Dhritarashtra and Gandhari that this child of yours can prove to be disastrous for this kingdom. So you give up on it. But Dhritarashtra and Gandhari did not abandon him due to son's attachment. He hugged her. After this 99 children were born one by one from those pots. And thus Gandhari's hundred sons were born. The first born son was named Duryodhana. After that Gandhari got pregnant again and a daughter was born to her. Whose name was Dushala. Dushala was married to Jayadratha, the king of the Indus country. And in the war of Mahabharata, Jayadratha died at the hands of Arjuna.
