कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की त्रयोदशी को धनतेरस का त्यौहार बड़ी श्रद्धा के साथ मनाया जाता है ।
एक पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार – एक समय भगवान विष्णु पृथ्वी लोक पर भ्रमण करने के लिए निकले । तब माता लक्ष्मी ने भी उनके साथ चलने का आग्रह किया । भगवान विष्णु बोले कि – देवी , अगर आप पृथ्वी पर जाकर , जैसा मैं कहूं ऐसा ही करो , तब आप मेरे साथ चल सकती हो । माता लक्ष्मी ने कहा – ठीक है स्वामी जैसा आप कहेंगे, मैं वैसा ही करूंगी । तब विष्णु भगवान और माता लक्ष्मी पृथ्वी लोक पर आकर भ्रमण करने लगे । कुछ देर पश्चात विष्णु भगवान ने माता लक्ष्मी से कहा कि – देवी , आप जरा यहां पर रुको । जब तक मैं ना आ जाऊं तब तक आप यहां से कहीं मत जाना । माता लक्ष्मी ने कहा – ठीक है , स्वामी आप जाइए। विष्णु भगवान दक्षिण दिशा की ओर चल पड़े । देवी लक्ष्मी के मन में एकाएक विचार आया कि – भगवान विष्णु मुझे अपने साथ क्यों नहीं ले कर गए । उन्होंने मुझे यहां रुकने को क्यों कहा ? उनका मन नहीं माना और वे विष्णु भगवान के पीछे पीछे चल पड़ी । माता लक्ष्मी ने देखा कि एक जगह पर सरसों के खेत में सुंदर फूल लगे हुए हैं । उन फूलों को देखकर माता का मन आकर्षित हो गया और उन्होंने फूलों को तोड़ कर अपना श्रृंगार किया । इसके बाद वे आगे चल पड़ी । आगे चलकर माता लक्ष्मी को एक गन्ने का खेत दिखाई दिया । तब माता लक्ष्मी ने गन्ने तोड़े और उन्हें चूसने लगी ।
ऐसा करते हुए विष्णु भगवान ने माता लक्ष्मी को देख लिया और उन पर क्रोधित हो गए । भगवान विष्णु क्रोधित होकर बोले कि – देवी तुम मेरे मना करने पर भी मेरे पीछे-पीछे यहां तक आ गई हो । और किसान के खेतों में आपने चोरी का दंडनीय अपराध किया है । मैं आपको श्राप देता हूं कि आप 12 साल तक इस किसान के घर में ही रहकर अपना अपराध भोगोगी। ऐसा कहकर विष्णु भगवान बैकुंठ लोक में चले गए । माता लक्ष्मी वही किसान के घर में रह गई । किसान बहुत ही गरीब था । एक दिन माता लक्ष्मी ने किसान की पत्नी से कहा कि पहले तुम नहा धोकर मेरी इस बनाई गई मिट्टी की मूर्ति की पूजा करो । फिर जाकर बाद में रसोई बनाना । ऐसा करने से तुम्हे जो चाहिए वहीं मिलेगा । किसान की पत्नी ने ऐसा ही किया । लक्ष्मी जी की कृपा के कारण किसान का घर थोड़े ही दिन में अन्न और धन-धान्य से परिपूर्ण हो गया । किसान के वे 12 वर्ष बहुत ही आनंद से बीते । विष्णु भगवान 12 वर्ष के बाद लक्ष्मी माता को लेने के लिए आए । किसान माता लक्ष्मी को जाने से रोकने लगा । तब विष्णु भगवान बोले कि – यह तो चंचला है , इन्हें कौन रोक सकता है ? ये कहीं पर भी एक जगह नहीं ठहरती । यह तो इन्हें मेरा श्राप था जो तुम्हारे घर में 12 वर्ष तक रह रही थी । अब इनके श्राप की अवधि पूरी हो गई है । इसलिए अब ये जा रही है । लेकिन किसान माता लक्ष्मी को बार-बार जाने से रोक रहा था और उनसे विनय पूर्वक निवेदन कर रहा था ।
माता लक्ष्मी को किसान पर दया आ गई और कहां कि – ठीक है , अगर तुम मुझे रोकना चाहते हो , तो जैसा मैं कहती हूं , ऐसा ही करो । कल धनतेरस है । कल घर को अच्छी तरह से लीप कर साफ सफाई करना। रात्रि में घी का दिया जलाना और संध्या काल में मेरी पूजा करना । एक तांबे के कलश में रूपए भर कर रखना । मैं उस कलश में निवास करूंगी । लेकिन जब तुम मेरी पूजा करोगे , तब मैं तुम्हें दिखाई नहीं दूंगी । तुम्हारी की गई इस एक दिन की पूजा से मैं वर्ष भर तक तुम्हारे घर में निवास करूंगी । यह कहकर मां लक्ष्मी और भगवान विष्णु दीपक के प्रकाश के साथ चारों दिशाओं में फैल गए । अगले दिन धनतेरस के दिन किसान ने माता लक्ष्मी के कहे अनुसार पूजन किया । किसान का घर सुख-समृद्धि और धन-धान्य से भर गया इसी कारण धनतेरस के दिन लक्ष्मी जी की पूजा की जाती है ।

According to a legend – once upon a time Lord Vishnu went out to visit the earth. Then Mata Lakshmi also requested to accompany him. Lord Vishnu said that - Goddess, if you go to earth and do as I say, then you can walk with me. Mata Lakshmi said - Well lord, I will do as you say. Then Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi came and started traveling on the earth. After some time Lord Vishnu told Mother Lakshmi that – Goddess, you just stay here. You don't go anywhere from here until I come. Mata Lakshmi said - Alright, lord you go. Lord Vishnu walked towards the south. A sudden thought came in the mind of Goddess Lakshmi that - why did Lord Vishnu not take me with him. Why did he ask me to stay here? Her mind did not obey and she followed Lord Vishnu. Mata Lakshmi saw that there are beautiful flowers in a mustard field at one place. Seeing those flowers, the mind of the mother was attracted and she plucked the flowers and did her makeup. After that they went ahead. Later, Mata Lakshmi saw a sugarcane field. Then Mata Lakshmi plucked the sugarcane and started sucking them.
While doing this Lord Vishnu saw Goddess Lakshmi and got angry on her. Lord Vishnu got angry and said that - Goddess, you have come here after me even after my refusal. And you have committed the punishable offense of theft in the farmer's fields. I curse you that you will suffer your crime by staying in this farmer's house for 12 years. Saying this Lord Vishnu went to Baikunth Lok. Mata Lakshmi stayed in the same farmer's house. The farmer was very poor. One day Mata Lakshmi told the farmer's wife that first you should wash your bath and worship this clay idol made by me. Then go and cook the kitchen later. By doing this you will get what you want. The farmer's wife did the same. Due to the grace of Lakshmi ji, the farmer's house became full of food and money in a few days. Those 12 years of farmer were spent very happily. Lord Vishnu came after 12 years to take Lakshmi Mata. The farmer started stopping Mata Lakshmi from going. Then Lord Vishnu said that - this is fickle, who can stop them? It does not stay in one place anywhere. This was my curse to him who was staying in your house for 12 years. Now their curse period is over. So now it is going. But the farmer was stopping Mata Lakshmi from going again and again and was requesting her graciously.
Mata Lakshmi took pity on the farmer and where - well, if you want to stop me, then do as I say. Tomorrow is Dhanteras. Tomorrow clean the house thoroughly by leaps and bounds. Lighting a lamp of ghee in the night and worshiping me in the evening. Keep money in a copper urn. I will reside in that Kalash. But when you worship me, then I will not be visible to you. With this one day worship done by you, I will live in your house for a whole year. Saying this Maa Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu spread in all four directions with the light of the lamp. The next day, on the day of Dhanteras, the farmer worshiped according to the instructions of Mata Lakshmi. The farmer's house was filled with happiness, prosperity and wealth, that is why Lakshmi is worshiped on the day of Dhanteras.
