कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की त्रयोदशी को धनवंतरी देवता का जन्म हुआ था । शरद पूर्णिमा के दिन चंद्रमा का , कार्तिक मास की कृष्ण पक्ष की द्वादशी को कामधेनु गाय का, त्रयोदशी को भगवान धनवंतरी का , चतुर्दशी को काली माता का और अमावस्या को महालक्ष्मी माता का समुद्र मंथन से प्रादुर्भाव हुआ था । देवता और दानव के द्वारा किए गए समुद्र मंथन से धन्वंतरी देवता अमृत का कलश हाथ में लिए उत्पन्न हुए थे ।
धन्वंतरी देवता को आयुर्वेद का जन्मदाता और देवताओं का चिकित्सक माना जाता है । भगवान विष्णु के 24 अवतारों में से 12 वा अवतार धन्वंतरी देवता का था ।
धनतेरस के दिन चांदी का खरीदना शुभ माना जाता है ।
धनतेरस के दिन संध्या काल में यमराज के नाम का दीपक भी जलाया जाता है । यह दीपक होने वाले अनिष्ट को समाप्त करता है । साल में एक बार इस दिन यमराज जी की पूजा की जाती है । इनकी पूजा करने से अकाल मृत्यु नहीं होती है ।
इसके पीछे एक पौराणिक कथा भी है ।
कथा के अनुसार – एक हिम नाम का राजा था । उनके घर एक पुत्र का जन्म हुआ । ज्योतिषियों ने कुंडली बनाई । कुंडली के अनुसार उसमें लिखा था – कि राजकुमार की मृत्यु विवाह के चौथे दिन ही हो जाएगी । यह सुनकर राजा और रानी बहुत ही दुखी हुए । समय बीतता गया । राजकुमार का विवाह हो गया । विवाह के बाद चौथा दिन भी आ गया । सबके मन में भय उत्पन्न हो रहा था । किंतु राजकुमार की पत्नी चिंता मुक्त थी । उसके मन में किसी भी प्रकार का भय नहीं था । क्योंकि वह महालक्ष्मी की भक्त थी । उसे माता लक्ष्मी पर पूरा विश्वास था । शाम के समय राजकुमार की पत्नी ने सारा महल दीपों से सजा दिया । और माता लक्ष्मी के भजन गाने लगी । यमदूत जब राजकुमार के प्राण लेने आए तो उसकी पत्नी की भक्ति की शक्ति से यमदूत महल में प्रवेश न कर सके और वापस लौट गए । फिर बाद में यमराज ने सर्प का रूप धारण करके महल में प्रवेश किया । जब उस सर्प ने राजकुमार के कक्ष में प्रवेश किया । तो दीपों की जयमाला की रोशनी और मां लक्ष्मी की कृपा से उसकी आंखें चौंधिया गई थी । राजकुमार और राजकुमार की पत्नी दोनों महालक्ष्मी माता के भजन गा रहे थे । सर्प बने यमराज भी उनके पास बैठ गए । यमराज उन दोनों के भजन में ऐसे खोए कि उन्हें पता नहीं चला कि सुबह कब हो गई । राजकुमार की मृत्यु का समय जा चुका था । तब यमराज ने अपना असली रूप धारण किया । यमराज ने राजकुमार को दीर्घायु होने का आशीर्वाद दिया ।और कहा कि जो कार्तिक कृष्ण पक्ष की त्रयोदशी को शाम के समय सरसों के तेल का दीपक जलाकर मेरा स्मरण करेगा , उसकी कभी अकाल मृत्यु नहीं होगी ।
कहते हैं उसी दिन से धनतेरस के दिन शाम के समय दीपक जलाने की परंपरा शुरू हुई । इसे "यम दिवा "यानी यम का दीपक भी कहते हैं । दीपक को घर के बाहर दक्षिण दिशा की ओर मुख करके रखना चाहिए ।
Dhanvantari Devta was born on the Trayodashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. On the day of Sharad Purnima, Moon was born, on Dwadashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month Kamdhenu cow, Trayodashi of Lord Dhanvantari, Chaturdashi of Kali Mata and Amavasya of Mahalakshmi Mata emerged from the ocean churning. Due to the churning of the ocean by the gods and demons, the god Dhanvantari was born with a pot of nectar in his hand.
The god Dhanvantari is considered to be the originator of Ayurveda and the physician of the gods. Out of the 24 incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the 12th incarnation was that of the god Dhanvantari.
Buying silver on the day of Dhanteras is considered auspicious.
A lamp in the name of Yamraj is also lit in the evening on the day of Dhanteras. This lamp eliminates the evil. Yamraj ji is worshiped once in a year on this day. Worshiping them does not lead to premature death.
There is also a legend behind it.
According to the legend – there was a king named Him. A son was born to them. Astrologers made horoscopes. According to the horoscope, it was written in it that the prince would die on the fourth day of marriage. Hearing this, the king and queen were very sad. Time passed by . The prince got married. The fourth day also came after the marriage. Fear was rising in everyone's mind. But the prince's wife was worry free. There was no fear in his mind. Because she was a devotee of Mahalakshmi. He had full faith in Mata Lakshmi. In the evening, the prince's wife decorated the whole palace with lamps. And started singing bhajans of Mata Lakshmi. When the eunuchs came to take the prince's life, the eunuchs could not enter the palace due to the devotion of his wife and returned. Then later Yamraj took the form of a snake and entered the palace. When that snake entered the prince's room. So his eyes were dazzled by the light of the garland of lamps and the grace of Maa Lakshmi. Both the prince and the prince's wife were singing hymns to Mahalakshmi Mata. Yamraj, who became a snake, also sat beside him. Yamraj was so lost in the hymns of both of them that he did not know when it was morning. The time of the death of the prince had passed. Then Yamraj assumed his true form. Yamraj blessed the prince with a long life. And said that whoever remembers me by lighting a mustard oil lamp in the evening on the Trayodashi of Kartik Krishna Paksha, he will never die prematurely.
It is said that from that day the tradition of lighting lamps in the evening on the day of Dhanteras started. It is also called "Yama Diva" i.e. Yama's lamp. The lamp should be kept outside the house facing south.
