पुराने समय में महामुनि मृकण्डु नाम के एक महर्षि थे । वे बहुत ही ज्ञानी और तेजस्वी थे । उनकी पत्नी का नाम मरुद्वती था। उन दोनों की कोई संतान नहीं थी। इसीलिए महामुनि ने भगवान शिव की तपस्या करके पुत्र का वरदान पाने की इच्छा रखी । वे भगवान शिव की तपस्या करने के लिए बैठ गए । काफी समय तक भगवान की घोर तपस्या करने से भगवान शिव जी प्रसन्न हुए और उनके सामने प्रकट हुए । तब महा ऋषि ने भगवान शिव को प्रणाम किया और उनके पैरों में गिर गए । भगवान शिव ने कहा कि मैं तुम्हारी इस तपस्या से प्रसन्न हुआ तुम्हें जो मांगना है मांग सकते हो । तो महा ऋषि ने भगवान शिव से पुत्र प्राप्ति का वरदान मांगा । भगवान शिव ने कहा किंतु तुम्हारे भाग्य में पुत्र प्राप्ति का कोई योग नहीं है । महर्षि बोले किंतु भोलेनाथ मैंने तो आपकी तपस्या पुत्र प्राप्ति के वरदान हेतु ही की है ,मुझे तो अगर कुछ चाहिए तो एक पुत्र का वरदान ही चाहिए । तब भगवान शिव ने महर्षि से कहा कि तुम्हें एक सकुशल ,प्रभावित, बुद्धिमान और 12 वर्ष तक जीवित रहने वाला पुत्र चाहिए या फिर एक दुर्व्यवहार, मंदबुद्धि और लंबी आयु वाला पुत्र चाहिए ।
तो महर्षि ने सकुशल, प्रभावित, बुद्धिमान और 12 वर्ष तक जीवित रहने वाले पुत्र की मांग की। भगवान शिव ने उनकी इच्छा पूरी कर दी ।कुछ समय बाद श्री महर्षि की पत्नी ने एक सुंदर पुत्र को जन्म दिया । उन्होंने उसका नाम मार्कण्डेय रखा। मार्कण्डेय एक बहुत ही बुद्धिमान बालक था। वह नियमित रूप से अपना जीवन व्यतीत कर रहा था । उसने अपने 11 साल पूरे कर लिए थें। एक दिन जब मार्कण्डेय नदी से स्नान कर कर वापस अपने घर की ओर आया तो उसने देखा कि उसके माता-पिता बहुत ही चिंतित हैं ।माता की आंखों से आंसू आ रहे हैं और पिता जी के चेहरे पर एक अजीब सी परेशानी दिख रही है । इसलिए मार्कण्डेय उनके पास गया और पूछा कि मां ,पिता जी क्या हुआ है। आप दोनों इतने चिंतित क्यों लग रहे हो। तो महा ऋषि ने सारी बात मार्कण्डेय को बताई मार्कण्डेय ने मुस्कुराकर कहा कि पिता जी अगर भगवान शिव ने मुझे 12 वर्ष तक जीवित रखा है । तो मैं भगवान शिव की आराधना करूंगा । उनसे और लंबी उम्र की कामना करूंगा । मार्कण्डेय की यह बात सुनकर माता-पिता मुस्कुराए और मार्कण्डेय का साथ दिया। मार्कण्डेय जंगल में दूर जाकर एक नदी किनारे बैठ गए । वहां मिट्टी से एक शिवलिंग बनाया और उसको फूलों से सजा करके उसके पास में बैठ करके तपस्या करनी शुरू कर दी । एक दिन की बात है वह प्रतिदिन की भांति शिवलिंग की आराधना में मग्न था। उनका अन्तिम समय आ गया था। अचानक वहां यमराज प्रकट हो गये जिन्हें देखकर वह नन्हा सा बालक डर गया ।उसने यमराज से उनके बारे में पूछा तो उन्होंने अपना प्रयोजन उसे बताया कि “हम तुम्हें लेने आये हैं तुम्हारी मृत्यु का समय आ गया है।“ऐसा सुनकर वह डर गया और अपनी छोटी-छोटी बांहों से शिवलिंग से लिपट गया और महामृत्युंजयमंत्र का जाप करने लगा। ऐसा देखकर जैसे ही यमराज ने अपना मृत्यु पाश उसकी ओर फेंका तभी वहां भगवान शंकर प्रकट हो गये । शिव जी ने कहा कि हे यमराज ! आप इसे नहीं ले जा सकते ,अब यह मेरे संरक्षण में है। इस पर यमराज ने कहा प्रभु! इसका अन्तिम समय आ चुका है इसको इतना ही जीवन जीना था। यदि यह जीवित रहा तो यह प्रकृति के नियमों के विरूद्ध होगा। इस पर भगवान शंकर बोले मैंने इसे अभयदान दे दिया है । यह अल्पायु से दीर्घायु हो चुका है। ऐसा सुनकर यमराज बोले, जैसी प्रभु की इच्छा और वहां से चले गये। शिवजी ने उस बालक को उठाया और बोले तुम्हें भयभीत होने की आवश्यकता नहीं है पुत्र! मैं तुम्हें दीर्घायु और विद्वता का आशीर्वाद देता हूं। जब बालक ने उन्हें देखा तो उनके चरणों में गिर पड़ा। शिवजी ने उसे उठाया और पूछा और कोई वरदान मांगना चाहते हो तो बोलो। उसने कहा कि मुझे केवल अपनी भक्ति में डूबे रहने का वरदान प्रदान करने की कृपा करें । इसके अतिरिक्त मुझे कुछ नहीं चाहिये। शिवजी ने उसे मनचाहा वरदान दिया और कहां कि जब तक यह पृथ्वी रहेगी तब तक तुम जीवित रहोगे । यह कहकर भोलेनाथ अन्तर्धान हो गये। यह बात उसने आकर अपनी मां और पिताजी को बताई तथा देखते ही देखते वह अपने नगर में प्रसिद्ध हो गया। आगे चलकर वही बालक शास्त्रों का बड़ा ज्ञाता बना तथा श्री मार्कण्डेयपुराण की रचना की।
तो भक्तों आज भी इस कलयुग में इस पृथ्वी पर मार्कंडेय ऋषि एक दरिया के रूप में प्रवाहित है और अपने भक्तों का कल्याण करते हैं।
In olden times there was a Maharshi named Mahamuni Mrikandu. He was very knowledgeable and brilliant. His wife's name was Marudvati. Both of them did not have any children. That is why Mahamuni wished to get the boon of a son by doing penance to Lord Shiva. He sat down to do penance to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was pleased after doing severe penance of the Lord for a long time and appeared in front of him. Then Maha Rishi bowed down to Lord Shiva and fell at his feet. Lord Shiva said that I was pleased with this penance of yours, you can ask for whatever you want. So the great sage asked Lord Shiva for the boon of having a son. Lord Shiva said but there is no chance of getting a son in your destiny. Maharishi said but Bholenath, I have done your penance only for the boon of getting a son, if I want anything, then I want the boon of a son. Then Lord Shiva told Maharishi that you want a safe, affected, intelligent and 12 years old son or you want a misbehaving, retarded and long life son.
So Maharishi asked for a son who was safe, impressed, intelligent and would live for 12 years. Lord Shiva fulfilled his wish. After some time the wife of Shri Maharishi gave birth to a beautiful son. They named him Markandeya. Markandeya was a very intelligent child. He was leading his life regularly. He had completed his 11 years. One day, when Markandeya came back to his house after taking a bath in the river, he saw that his parents were very worried. Tears were coming from his eyes and a strange problem was seen on his face. So Markandeya went to him and asked what happened mother, father. Why do you both seem so worried? So the great sage told the whole thing to Markandeya, Markandeya smiled and said that father, if Lord Shiva has kept me alive for 12 years. So I will worship Lord Shiva. I wish him a longer life. On hearing this talk of Markandeya, the parents smiled and supported Markandeya. Markandeya went away in the forest and sat on the bank of a river. There he made a Shivling out of clay and decorated it with flowers and started doing penance by sitting next to it. It was a matter of one day that he was engrossed in the worship of Shivling as usual. His last time had come. Suddenly Yamraj appeared there, seeing that the little boy was frightened. He asked Yamraj about him, then he told his purpose that "We have come to take you, the time of your death has come." Hearing this, he got scared and He wrapped himself around the Shivling with his small arms and started chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. Seeing this, as soon as Yamraj threw his death loop towards him, only then Lord Shankar appeared there. Shiva said that O Yamraj! You can't take it, now it's under my protection. On this Yamraj said Lord! Its last time has come, he had to live this life. If it survives it will be against the laws of nature. On this, Lord Shankar said, I have given him protection. It has been long since short. Hearing this, Yamraj said, as per the will of the Lord and left from there. Shivji picked up that child and said, you do not need to be afraid, son! I bless you with longevity and scholarship. When the boy saw them, he fell at his feet. Shivaji picked him up and asked and if you want to ask for any boon, then speak. He said that please grant me the boon of being immersed in your devotion only. Apart from this, I don't want anything. Shivaji gave him the boon he wanted and where will you live as long as this earth is there. Saying this Bholenath disappeared. He came and told this to his mother and father and on seeing this he became famous in his city. Later on, the same child became a great knower of scriptures and composed Shri Markandeya Purana.
So devotees even today in this Kaliyuga, the Markandeya sage flows on this earth as a river and does welfare of his devotees.
