शरद पूर्णिमा के बाद की कार्तिक मास की एकम तिथि से कार्तिक स्नान शुरू हो जाता है । जो लोग कार्तिक स्नान करते हैं वें ब्रह्म मुहूर्त में उठकर किसी पवित्र नदी या फिर घर में ही स्नान के जल में कुछ बूंदे गंगाजल की डालकर स्नान करते है । फिर मंदिर में जा कर पूजा करते हैं और कार्तिक मास की कहानी सुनते हैं । कार्तिक मास की पौराणिक कथा इस प्रकार है
एक बूढ़ा ससुर था । उसकी सात बहूए थी । उसने अपनी बहूओ से कहा कि कल से कार्तिक स्नान आरंभ होने वाला है । मैं कार्तिक स्नान करना चाहता हूं । क्या तुम मुझे कार्तिक स्नान करवा दोगी ? छोटी छह बहुओं ने मना कर दिया और कहा कि नहीं पिता जी , हम आपको सुबह-सुबह कार्तिक स्नान नहीं करवा पाएंगे । तब उसने अपनी सबसे बड़ी बहू से पूछा तो सबसे बड़ी बहू ने कहा जी पिता जी , ठीक है मैं आपको कार्तिक स्नान करवा दूंगी । अगले दिन से ससुर ने कार्तिक स्नान करना शुरू किया तो बड़ी बहू सुबह ब्रह्म मुहूर्त में उठकर अपने ससुर के स्नान के लिए कुएं से जल भरकर ले आती है। ससुर के नहाने के बाद उनकी धोती धोकर वही आंगन में सुखा देती है । जब वह धोती सुखाती थी तो उसमें से जो पानी की बूंदे टपकती वह नीचे हीरे मोती में बदल जाती । ऐसे ही थोड़े दिन बीत गए जब छोटी बहूओ ने देखा कि बड़ी बहू जो धोती धोकर सुखाती है उसकी जो बूंदे नीचे जमीन पर गिरती है वह हीरे मोती बन जाती है । तो क्यों ना हम पिताजी को कल से कहे कि हमारे यहां पर आकर स्नान करें । वें अपने ससुर से ऐसा ही कहती हैं । तब बूढ़ा ससुर बोला कि कोई बात नहीं मुझे तो कार्तिक स्नान करना है , कल से तुम्हारे यहां स्नान कर लूंगा । जैसे ही अगले दिन ससुर कार्तिक स्नान करते हैं और वे बहुएं जल भरकर लेकर आती हैं और ससुर की धोती धोकर और सुखा कर जैसे ही आंगन में डालती है तो पानी की बूंदे टपकती है उससे हीरे मोती बनने की बजाय वहां पर कीचड़ ही कीचड़ हो जाता है । छह बहुओं ने बारी-बारी से ऐसा करके देखा लेकिन किसी के भी आंगन में हीरे मोती नहीं बनते । वें अपने ससुर से कहती है कि पिताजी हमसे यह नहीं होगा , यहां पर तो सारे में कीचड़ ही कीचड़ हो गया है । आप जाओ और बड़ी बहू के घर में ही कार्तिक स्नान करो । ससुर अगले दिन से फिर बड़ी बहू के घर जाकर स्नान करना शुरू कर देता है । जैसे ही बड़ी बहू ससुर के स्नान करने के पश्चात अपने ससुर की धोती धो कर सुखाती है , वहां फिर से पानी की बूंदों से हीरे मोती बनने शुरू हो जाते हैं । कार्तिक स्नान अब खत्म होने को आ गया था , तो ससुर ने अपनी बड़ी बहू से कहा कि मैं ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराना चाहता हूं और इसके साथ ही सारे घर वाले भी भोजन करेंगे । बड़ी बहू बोली कोई बात नहीं पिताजी , मैं सबका भोजन बना दूंगी । आप जाकर ब्राह्मणों को और बाकी के सब घर वालों को निमंत्रण दे देना । ससुर जाकर ब्राह्मणों को निमंत्रण देता है और जाकर अपनी छह बहुओं को भी भोजन के लिए निमंत्रण देता है। छह बहुओं ने कहा कि अगर बड़ी बहू घर में रहेगी तो हम भोजन के लिए नहीं आएंगे । इसलिए जब हम आए तो उसे कह देना कि वह कहीं बाहर चली जाए । ससुर उनकी यह बात सुनकर परेशान हो जाता है और वापस बड़ी बहू से आकर कहता है कि छोटी बहुओं ने ऐसा कहा है तो बड़ी बहू बोलती है कोई बात नहीं पिताजी , मैं सब का खाना बनाकर रख जाऊंगी और ब्राह्मणों को भोजन करवा दूंगी और जब छोटी बहुएं आएगी , तब मैं खेत में चली जाऊंगी । बड़ी बहू ऐसा ही करती है । अगले दिन बड़ी बहू ब्राह्मणों को भोजन करवाकर और दो रोटी अपने पल्ले में बांधकर खेत में चली जाती है । उन रोटी को बड़ी बहू चिड़ियों को खिला देती है । और साथ ही साथ कहती है – रामजी की चिड़िया , रामजी का खेत । रामजी की चिड़िया , रामजी का खेत । उधर छह बहुएं आकर खाना खाती हैं और जाते हुए बचे हुए खाने में मिट्टी और कंकड़ डाल देती है । जब बड़ी बहू खेत से वापस घर आती है तो ससुर कहता है कि सबने भोजन कर लिया हैं, अब तुम भी भोजन कर लो । पता नहीं छोटी बहुओं ने कुछ छोड़ा है तुम्हारे लिए या नहीं । वह बोली कोई बात नहीं पिताजी , अगर भोजन नहीं होगा , तो मैं दोबारा बना लूंगी । लेकिन जैसे ही वो रसोई में जाती है और खाने का ढक्कन उठाकर देखती है तो खीर के कटोरे में सोने ,चांदी , हीरे ,मोती भरे पाते हैं और जैसे ही वो रोटी के कटोरे का ढक्कन उठाकर देखती है वह भी हीरे ,मोती और जेवरात से भरा होता है । यह सब वह अपने ससुर को बताती है । तो ससुर कहता हैं कि यह सब तुम्हारी निस्वार्थ सेवा का ही फल है , जो तुमने मुझे निस्वार्थ भाव से कार्तिक स्नान कराया है । इससे कार्तिक महाराज ने खुश होकर तुम्हारा घर धन-धान्य और सौभाग्य से भर दिया है । अगले दिन जब बड़ा बेटा खेत में जा कर देखता है तो खेत में भी उसकी फसलें सोने चांदी से लहरा रही होती हैं । बड़े बेटे और बड़ी बहु के घर में इतनी धन संपत्ति को देखकर उसके छोटे भाई और छोटी बहूए अपने आप को कोस रहे होते हैं कि हमने क्यों शुरू में ही ससुर को कार्तिक स्नान के लिए हां क्यों नहीं कहा था ।
