पुराने समय की बात है । एक पुंडरीक नाम का एक व्यक्ति था । वह दांडीवन नामक एक स्थान पर अपने माता-पिता के साथ रहता था । वह अपने माता पिता की बहुत ही सेवा करता था । समय आने पर उसके माता-पिता ने एक अच्छी सी लड़की देख कर उसका विवाह कर दिया । विवाह के पश्चात पुंडरीक के व्यवहार में बहुत ही अंतर आ गया । वह अब सारा ध्यान अपनी पत्नी पर ही देता था । अपने माता पिता की सेवा नहीं करता था । पुंडरीक और उसकी पत्नी  माता – पिता को बहुत ही तंग करते थे । उनसे घर का सारा काम करवाते थे । एक दिन पुंडरीक के माता-पिता ने सोचा कि – अब हमारा यहां पर कुछ काम नहीं है । अब हमसे पुंडरीक के अत्याचार सहन नहीं होते , हमें काशी के लिए चल देना चाहिए । माता-पिता दोनों काशी के लिए पैदल चल दिए । रास्ते में उन्हें साधु संतों का एक काफिला मिला । वह काफिला भी काशी जा रहा था । बूढ़े मां-बाप उस काफिले में शामिल हो गए  । पुंडरीक की पत्नी ने कहा कि – देखो , तुम्हारे माता-पिता काशी यात्रा के लिए चले गए हैं । मुझे डर है कि तुम्हारे माता  – पिता सोने के जेवरात चुरा कर ले गए हैं और वे काशी जाकर उन्हें बेच ना दे । हमें भी उनके पीछे-पीछे जाना चाहिए । पुंडरीक और उसकी पत्नी भी घोड़े पर सवार होकर उनके पीछे –  पीछे काशी के लिए चल पड़े । रास्ते में उन्हें काशी जाने वाला काफिला मिला । उसमें ही उन्होंने अपने माता-पिता को देखा । जब रात्रि के समय काफिला रुकता , तो सब विश्राम करते थे । परंतु पुंडरीक अपने माता-पिता से घोड़ों की सेवा करवाता था । और उन्हें विश्राम नहीं करने देता था । उसके माता-पिता बहुत ही दुखी हो गए थे । वे सोचने लगे कि हम तो तीर्थ यात्रा के लिए निकले थे , लेकिन इसने हमारा पीछा यहां भी नहीं छोड़ा । जैसे ही रात्रि होती और काफिला रुकता , सब विश्राम करते  ।लेकिन पुंडरीक अपने माता-पिता से घोड़ों की सेवा और अन्य कार्य करवाता था । चलते – चलते काफिला  कुक्कुट स्वामी के आश्रम में पहुंचा । सब लंबी यात्रा करके थक गए थे । उन्होंने सोचा कि यहीं पर क्यों ना दो रात विश्राम कर लिया जाए । सब लोग रात्रि को सो गए । लेकिन पुंडरीक को नींद नहीं आई । वह सारी रात जागता रहा । आधी रात बीत चुकी थी । तब उसने देखा कि कुछ स्त्रियां पुराने मैले कपड़ों में आश्रम में प्रवेश करती है । आश्रम में जाकर उन्होंने साफ सफाई की । साधु-संतों के कपड़े धोएं  । पानी भर कर रखा और उसके बाद जब वे आश्रम से निकली तो उनके वस्त्र साफ –  सुथरे थे । आश्रम से थोड़ी दूरी पर ही  वे स्त्रियां गायब हो जाती थी । पुंडरीक को यह सब देखकर आश्चर्य हुआ । ऐसा ही अगली रात भी हुआ। पुंडरीक ने देखा कि वें स्त्रियां फिर मैले कपड़ों में आती है । साधु संतों की सेवा करती हैं । और जब आश्रम से निकलती है , तो उनके वस्त्र फिर से साफ-सुथरे होते थे । जब वे आश्रम से निकल रही थी तो पुंडरीक से रहा नही गया और उनसे पूछा कि – आप कौन है ? जब आप आई थी ,तो आप के वस्त्र बहुत ही मैले थें और अब आप आश्रम से जा रही हैं , तो आप के वस्त्र बहुत ही साफ हैं । इसका क्या कारण है ? उन्होंने बताया कि हम गंगा और यमुना आदि पवित्र नदियां है । जब तुम जैसे पापी हम में स्नान करते हैं , तो हमारे वस्त्र मैले हो जाते हैं और साधु संतों की सेवा करने से हमारे वस्त्र साफ हो जाते हैं । तुम भी बहुत ही बड़े पापी हो । क्योंकि तुमने अपने माता-पिता की सेवा नहीं की । और उन्हें इस यात्रा में भी बहुत कष्ट देते आए हो । उनकी बात सुनकर पुंडरीक को अपनी करनी पर पछतावा होने लगा । वह फिर से अपने माता-पिता का आज्ञाकारी पुत्र बनना चाहता था । इसलिए उसने जब अगली सुबह हुई , तो उसने अपने माता-पिता से हाथ जोड़कर क्षमा मांगी और कहा कि आप वापस मेरे साथ घर चलिए । मैं आपकी सेवा करके अपना जीवन सफल करना चाहता हूं । और उसने अपनी पत्नी को भी समझाया । दोनों पति पत्नी अपने माता-पिता को साथ लेकर चले । अब वह अपने माता-पिता की बहुत ही सेवा करता था । अपने माता-पिता को भोजन कराने के पश्चात ही दोनों पति-पत्नी भोजन ग्रहण करते थे । अब तो पुंडरीक की पत्नी भी अपने सास-ससुर के साथ अच्छा व्यवहार करती थी । एक दिन की बात है कि पुंडरीक अपने माता-पिता के चरण दबा रहा था कि तभी श्री कृष्ण भगवान माता रुक्मणी जी के साथ उसके घर के द्वार पर आए । और पुंडरीक का नाम लेकर उसे पुकारने लगे कि पुंडरीक  बाहर आओ । पुंडरीक ने पूछा कि आप कौन हो ? तब भगवान बोले कि – मैं भगवान श्री कृष्ण हूं जिसका तुम दिन रात नाम जपते हो । पुंडरीक ने कहा कि –  भगवान मुझे क्षमा करना , मैं अभी बाहर नहीं आ सकता । मैं अपने माता-पिता के चरण दबा रहा हूं । जब वें सो जाएंगे , तब मैं आपके पास आऊंगा । भगवान श्री कृष्ण खड़े-खड़े थक गए और उन्होंने पुंडरीक से पूछा कि –  कितना समय और लगेगा । जल्दी बाहर आओ । तब पुंडरीक बोला –  भगवान आपको अभी और प्रतीक्षा करनी होगी । श्री कृष्ण बोले –  अच्छा ठीक है , मुझे कुछ बैठने के लिए आसन दे दो । तब उसने भगवान के सामने एक ईट सरका कर कहा कि आप इस पर खड़े हो जाइए । भगवान बहुत देर से खड़े –  खड़े थक गए थे । इसलिए उन्होंने अपने दोनों हाथ कमर पर रख लिए और उस ईट पर दोनों पैर को जोड़कर खड़े हो गए । भगवान ये सब देखकर बहुत खुश हो रहे थे । जब पुंडरीक के माता-पिता को नींद आ गई  । तब पुंडरीक ने जाकर भगवान श्री कृष्ण का स्वागत किया । श्री कृष्ण ने कहा कि – पुंडरीक मैं तुम्हारी मातृ और पितृ भक्ति से बहुत ही प्रसन्न हूं । बताओ , तुम्हें क्या वर चाहिए । पुंडरीक ने कहा कि–  नहीं भगवन , मुझे आपके दर्शन हो गए , मुझे इसके अलावा और कुछ नहीं चाहिए । तब श्रीकृष्ण बोले कि – नहीं पुत्र ,  मैं तुमसे बहुत प्रसन्न हूं और मैं तुम्हें एक वर देना चाहता हूं । मांगो तुम्हें क्या चाहिए ? तब पुंडरीक ने कहा कि –  भगवन ,  आप यहीं पर खड़े रहकर अपने भक्तजनों का उद्धार करें । तब भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने पुंडरीक और उसके माता-पिता को उसी समय मोक्ष प्रदान कर उन्हें अपने भगवत धाम भेज दिया ।  भगवान श्री कृष्ण का यही रुप श्री विग्रह के रूप में वहीं पर स्थापित हो गया । 

तो भक्तों, भगवान श्री कृष्ण अपने उस श्री विग्रह में विट्ठल  विठोबा कहलाए । विट्ठल भगवान एक शंकु के आकार का मुकुट पहने हुए हैं । उनके कानों में मछली के आकार की बालियां हैं । भगवान श्री विट्ठल देव जी का श्री विग्रह आज भी धरती पर उसी जगह स्थापित है । आज भी भगवान वहां एक ईंट पर खड़े है। पुंडरीक के नाम पर ही उस स्थान का नाम पंढरपुर पड़ गया ।

भक्तों , इससे हमें यही शिक्षा मिलती है कि माता पिता की सेवा भगवान की सेवा से भी बढ़कर है । जो लोग अपने माता – पिता की सेवा करते हैं , उनसे भगवान हमेशा प्रसन्न रहते हैं ।

It's old time. There was a man named Pundarik. He lived with his parents at a place called Dandivan. He served his parents a lot. When the time came, her parents saw a nice girl and got her married. There was a lot of difference in Pundarik's behavior after marriage. Now he used to give all the attention to his wife only. He did not serve his parents. Pundarik and his wife used to harass the parents very much. He used to make them do all the household chores. One day Pundarik's parents thought that now we have nothing to do here. Now we do not tolerate Pundarik's atrocities, we should leave for Kashi. Both the parents left on foot for Kashi. On the way he met a convoy of sages. That convoy was also going to Kashi. The old parents joined the convoy. Pundarik's wife said, "Look, your parents have gone to visit Kashi. I am afraid that your parents have stolen the gold jewelery and they will not go to Kashi and sell them. We should also go after them. Pundarik and his wife also rode on horse and followed them for Kashi. On the way they found a convoy going to Kashi. It was there that he saw his parents. When the convoy stopped at night, everyone used to rest. But Pundarik used to get his parents to take care of the horses. and did not allow them to rest. His parents were very sad. They started thinking that we had gone for pilgrimage, but it did not leave us here either. As night fell and the convoy stopped, everyone rested. While walking, the convoy reached the Poultry Swami's ashram. Everyone was tired from the long journey. He thought that why not take rest for two nights here. Everyone slept at night. But Pundarik could not sleep. He stayed awake all night. Half the night had passed . Then he saw some women entering the ashram in dirty old clothes. After going to the ashram, he cleaned. Wash the clothes of the saints. Filled it with water and after that when she came out of the ashram, her clothes were clean. Those women used to disappear only at a short distance from the ashram. Pundarik was surprised to see all this. The same happened the next night as well. Pundarik saw those women again come in dirty clothes. Sadhus serve the saints. And when she left the ashram, her clothes were clean again. When she was leaving the ashram, Pundarik could not stay and asked her – who are you? When you came, your clothes were very dirty and now you are leaving the ashram, your clothes are very clean. What is the reason for this ? He told that we are holy rivers like Ganga and Yamuna etc. When sinners like you bathe in us, our clothes become dirty and our clothes get cleaned by serving sages. You are also a great sinner. Because you did not serve your parents. And you have been giving them a lot of trouble in this journey too. Hearing his words, Pundarik started to regret his actions. He again wanted to be the obedient son of his parents. So when she came the next morning, she apologized to her parents with folded hands and asked you to come back home with me. I want to make my life successful by serving you. And he explained it to his wife also. Both husband and wife took their parents along with them. Now he used to serve his parents very much. Both husband and wife used to take food only after feeding their parents. Now even Pundarika's wife used to treat her mother-in-law well. It is a matter of one day that Pundarik was pressing the feet of his parents when Shri Krishna accompanied by Lord Mata Rukmani ji came to the door of his house. And taking the name of Pundarik started calling him that Pundarik should come out. Pundarik asked who are you? Then God said that - I am Lord Shri Krishna, whose name you chant day and night. Pundarik said that - God forgive me, I cannot come out now. I am pressing on the feet of my parents. I will come to you when he sleeps. Lord Shri Krishna got tired of standing and asked Pundarika – how much more time would it take. come out early Then Pundarik said - Lord you have to wait longer. Shri Krishna said – All right, give me some seat to sit. Then he moved a brick in front of God and said that you should stand on it. Bhagwan was tired of standing for a long time. So he put both his hands on the waist and stood on that brick with both feet folded. God was getting very happy seeing all this. When Pundarik's parents fell asleep. Then Pundarika went and welcomed Lord Krishna. Shri Krishna said that – Pundarik, I am very happy with your maternal and paternal devotion. Tell me, what do you want? Pundarik said – No God, I have seen you, I don't want anything other than this. Then Shri Krishna said - No son, I am very happy with you and I want to give you a boon. Ask what do you want? Then Pundarik said – Lord, you save your devotees by standing here. Then Lord Shri Krishna gave salvation to Pundarik and his parents at the same time and gave them salvation in their God.

I sent This form of Lord Shri Krishna was established there in the form of Shri Deity.

So devotees, Lord Shri Krishna in that Shri Deity is called Vitthal Vithoba. Lord Vitthal is wearing a cone shaped crown. He has fish-shaped earrings in his ears. The Shri Vigraha of Lord Shri Vitthal Dev ji is still established at the same place on earth. Even today God is standing there on a brick. The place was named Pandharpur after the name of Pundarik.

Devotees, this teaches us that service to parents is more important than service to God. God is always pleased with those who serve their parents.

जिंदगी भर पाप किये। वेश्यावृति की। फिर भी क्यों मिला स्वर्ग | Gyan Ganga | hindi story

एक बार एक अजामिल नाम का ब्राह्मण था । जाति से ब्राह्मण होने के बाद भी वह बहुत ही दुष्ट प्रकृति का था । वह चोरी करता था । साधु-संतों को लूट लेता था । रास्ते में आते-जाते राहगीरों का सारा सामान चुरा लेता था । वह अपने माता-पिता को बहुत ही कष्ट देता था । वह बहुत ही दुष्ट संगति का हो गया था । वह हर रोज मदिरा का सेवन करता था । एक दिन वह नगर में घूमने गया , वहां पर उसने एक वैश्या को देखा । वह उस पर आसक्त हो गया और उसे अपने घर ले आया ।  उसने उससे विवाह रचा लिया । उस वैश्या से उसको 9 संतानें प्राप्त हुई । और 10 वीं संतान भी कुछ ही दिनों में पैदा होने वाली थी । एक  दिन अजामिल के गांव में कुछ साधु संत आए हुए थे । साधु संतों ने गांव के लोगों से कहा कि –  हमें भोजन करना है , अगर कोई अच्छा और भला सा घर हो , जहां का आचरण शुद्ध हो , जिस घर में लोग शाकाहारी हों ।  हमें ऐसा घर बता दो जहां हमें भोजन प्राप्त हो सके  ।  गांव के कुछ लोगों ने मजाक ही मजाक में अजामिल का घर बता दिया और कहा कि –  वह बहुत ही धर्मात्मा है , आपका वहां पर भोजन करना ठीक रहेगा । साधु-संत अजामिल के घर आ पहुंचे । साधु संतों ने अजामिल के घर आकर उससे भोजन के लिए कहा । लेकिन अजामिल तो उन साधु-संतों पर क्रोधित हो गया ,  परन्तु उसकी पत्नी ने उन साधु-संतों को प्रणाम करके भोजन कराया । साधु संत भोजन करके बहुत ही प्रसन्न हो गए और सोचा कि जाते – जाते इसका कुछ भला करके जाएं । साधु संत ने अजामिल से कहा कि अब तुम्हारी जो संतान होगी उसका नाम तुम नारायण रखना । अजामिल बोला –  ठीक है , इसमें नाम रखने में मेरा क्या जाता है । मैं नारायण नाम रख दूंगा । परंतु अब आप यहां से जाइए । साधु संत उसे आशीर्वाद देकर चले गए । अजामिल की 10 वीं संतान हुई और उसने उसका नाम नारायण रखा । अजामिल अपने छोटे बेटे से बहुत ही प्यार करता था । वह हर समय उसे नारायण नारायण पुकारता था । अजामिल अब बूढ़ा हो चला था । अजामिल की मृत्यु का समय आ गया था । यमदूत उसके घर आए । वह यमदूतों को देखकर डर गया और अपने बेटे नारायण को पुकारने लगा । उसका बेटा नारायण दूर कहीं खेल रहा था । उसे अपने पिता की आवाज सुनाई नहीं दी  । वह जोर-जोर से नारायण – नारायण कह रहा था कि – नारायण बेटा इधर आ , नारायण बेटा इधर आ । वह यमदूतों के भयानक रूप को देखकर कांप उठा था। वह नारायण नारायण चिल्ला रहा था । उसका बेटा तो नहीं आया । लेकिन विष्णु भगवान  के पार्षदों  ने जब सुना कि कोई नारायण नारायण पुकार रहा है । वें तुरंत अजामिल के पास पहुंचे । विष्णु भगवान के पार्षदों ने देखा कि यमदूत अजामिल के प्राण खींच रहे हैं । तब उन्होंने उन यमदूतों को रोक दिया और कहा कि  – तुम अब इसके प्राण नहीं हर सकते  और ना ही इसे यमलोक ले जा सकते हो । तब यमदूत कहने लगे कि –  यह बहुत ही बड़ा पापी है , इसमें जीवन भर चोरी , छल – कपट किया है । वेश्या का संग किया है । इसने अपने माता-पिता का सम्मान भी नहीं किया । इसे नरक भोगना पड़ेगा ।  तब विष्णु भगवान के पार्षद बोले कि – चाहे इसने जीवन भर कितना भी पाप क्यों ना किया हो , लेकिन अंत समय में इसने हमारे भगवान नारायण का नाम जपा है । इससे यह सभी पापों से मुक्त होता है । पार्षद बोले कि   भगवान का नाम बड़े से बड़े पाप को नष्ट करने की क्षमता रखता है ।  मनुष्य चाहे मजबूरी में या फिर गलती से भी यदि भगवान का भजन करता है ,  तो वह तुरंत उसी समय पाप से मुक्त हो जाता है । जिस प्रकार जाने या फिर अनजाने में ईंधन से अग्नि का स्पर्श होते ही वह जलकर भस्म हो जाता है , उसी तरह से अजामिल के सारे पाप नष्ट हो गए हैं । अब यह नरक में नहीं जाएगा । यमदूतों ने विष्णु जी के पार्षदों का कहना मान कर अजामिल को मुक्त कर दिया । और यमदूत वहां से चले गए ।  अजामिल यह सब देख और सुन रहा था  । इस सब को देखने के बाद उसके मन में भगवान के प्रति श्रद्धा भाव और भक्ति उत्पन्न हो गई । उसने सोचा कि सिर्फ भगवान के नाम का ही जब इतना प्रताप है , अगर मैं जीवन भर उनका भजन करता तो कितना अच्छा होता। विष्णु भगवान के पार्षदो ने अजामिल  को अपने साथ स्वर्ण के विमान में बिठाया । और उसे लेकर बैकुंठ धाम चले गए । अजामिल संसार के बंधनों से मुक्त होकर मोक्ष पा गया ।

Once there was a Brahmin named Ajamil. Despite being a Brahmin by caste, he was of a very evil nature. He used to steal. He used to rob the saints and saints. On the way, he used to steal all the belongings of the passers-by. He used to give a lot of trouble to his parents. He had become very bad company. He used to drink alcohol every day. One day he went for a walk in the city, where he saw a prostitute. He became enamored of her and brought her to his house. He married her. From that prostitute he got 9 children. And the 10th child was also going to be born in a few days. One day some sages were visiting the village of Ajamil. The sages told the people of the village that - we have to eat food, if there is a good and good house, where the behavior is pure, the house where people are vegetarian. Tell us a house where we can get food. Some people of the village jokingly told Ajamil's house and said that - he is very pious, it will be fine for you to eat there. The sages and saints came to Ajamil's house. The sages came to Ajamil's house and asked him for food. But Ajamil got angry with those sages, but his wife offered them food after paying obeisance to those sages. The sages became very happy after eating the food and thought that they should go and do some good for it. The sage saint told Ajamil that now you should name the child you will have as Narayan. Ajamil said – Well, what does it take to name me in this. I will name Narayan. But now you leave here. The sages left after blessing him. Ajamil had his 10th child and named him Narayan. Ajamil loved his younger son very much. He used to call him Narayan Narayan all the time. Ajamil was now old. The time had come for Ajamil to die. The eunuchs came to his house. He got scared seeing the eunuchs and started calling his son Narayan. His son Narayan was playing somewhere far away. He could not hear his father's voice. He was saying loudly Narayan – Narayan that – Narayan son come here, Narayan son come here. He was trembling at the terrible appearance of the eunuchs. He was shouting Narayan Narayan. His son did not come. But when the councilors of Lord Vishnu heard that someone was calling Narayan Narayan. He immediately approached Ajamil. The councilors of Lord Vishnu saw that the eunuchs were taking away the life of Ajamil. Then he stopped those eunuchs and said that – you cannot lose its life now nor can you take it to Yamalok. Then the eunuchs started saying that – This is a very big sinner, he has committed theft, deceit and deceit throughout his life. Associated with a prostitute. He didn't even respect his parents. He will have to suffer hell. Then the councilor of Lord Vishnu said that - no matter how many sins he has committed throughout his life, but in the end time he has chanted the name of our Lord Narayana. By this he becomes free from all sins. The councilor said that the name of God has the ability to destroy the biggest sin. Whether by compulsion or even by mistake, if a person worships God, then he is immediately freed from sin. Just as, knowingly or unknowingly, when the fire touches the fire, it burns to ashes, in the same way all the sins of Ajamila are destroyed. Now it will not go to hell. The Yamadoots freed Ajamil by obeying the councilors of Vishnu. And the eunuchs left from there. Ajamil was seeing and hearing all this. After seeing all this, reverence and devotion towards God arose in his mind. He thought that when only the name of the Lord has so much glory, how good it would be if I used to worship him for the rest of my life. The councilors of Lord Vishnu put Ajamil with them in a golden plane. And took him to Baikunth Dham. Ajamila got liberated from the shackles of the world and attained salvation.

धर्म ग्रंथों के अनुसार – कार्तिक मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की द्वितीया को भैया दूज का त्यौहार मनाया जाता है । इसे यम द्वितीया के नाम से भी जाना जाता है । क्योंकि इस दिन यमुना ने अपने भाई यमराज जी का आदर सत्कार करके उनसे वरदान प्राप्त किया था ।

 एक पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार – सूर्य भगवान की पत्नी का नाम संध्या था । उनकी एक पुत्री और एक पुत्र था । उनकी पुत्री का नाम यमुना और पुत्र का नाम यमराज था । संध्या सूर्यदेव का तेज सहन नहीं कर पाती थी और एक दिन वो अपनी छाया को छोड़कर तपस्या करने के लिए चली गई । छाया से भी सूर्य देव को एक पुत्र और एक पुत्री की प्राप्ति हुई । पुत्र का नाम शनि देव और पुत्री का नाम ताप्ती था । यमराज और यमुना में आपस में बहुत स्नेह था । भगवान के आदेशानुसार – यमराज ने पापियों को दंड देने का कार्यभार संभाला । और उन्होंने अपनी यमपुरी नगरी की रचना की । उधर यमुना भी नदी के रूप में परिवर्तित हो गई । इसी तरह समय बीतता चला गया । यमराज अपनी बहन से बहुत ही स्नेह करते थे । उन्हें अपनी बहन की बहुत याद सताती थी । किंतु अधिक व्यस्त होने के कारण वे अपनी बहन यमुना से मिलने नहीं जा पाते थे । यमुना अपने भाई यमराज को अपने घर आने का कई बार निमंत्रण देती थी । परंतु यमराज जी जा ही नहीं पाते थे । एक दिन यमुना ने अपने भाई यमराज को वचन देकर अपने घर भोजन निमंत्रण के लिए बुलाया । यमराज ने सोचा कि मैं तो काल हूं । मैं सबके प्राणों का हरण करता हूं । मुझे कोई भी अपने घर नहीं बुलाता । सब मुझे अपने घर बुलाने से डरते हैं । लेकिन मेरी बहन जिस सदभावना से मुझे बुला रही है , उसका पालन करना मेरा धर्म है । इसलिए यमराज ने अपनी बहन के घर जाते समय नरक भोग रहे सारे जीवो को मुक्त कर दिया । उस दिन यमपुरी में उत्सव मनाया गया । और यमराज जी अपनी बहन यमुना के घर चले गए । यमुना अपने भाई को देखकर बहुत खुश हुई । यमुना ने अपने भाई के आने की खुशी में बहुत ही स्वादिष्ट व्यंजन बनाए और उनका बहुत ही आतिथ्य सत्कार किया । यमराज जी उनके आतिथ्य सत्कार से बहुत ही प्रसन्न हुए और उनसे वरदान मांगने को कहा । तब यमुना जी ने कहा कि – भैया , आप आज के दिन प्रतिवर्ष मेरे घर आया करो । और आज के दिन जो भी भाई अपनी बहन के घर जाकर उससे तिलक करवाए और उसका आतिथ्य सत्कार ग्रहण करें । उसे तुम्हारा भय नहीं होना चाहिए और ना ही उसकी अकाल मृत्यु होनी चाहिए । यमराज जी ने "तथास्तु "कहा । यमराज जी ने अपनी बहन को बहुत से उपहार दिए और अपनी यमपुरी को प्रस्थान किया । तभी से यह भैया दूज मनाने की परंपरा चली आ रही है । मान्यता के अनुसार इस दिन यमराज जी और यमुना जी का पूजन करना चाहिए । इस दिन भाई – बहन को यमुना नदी में स्नान करना चाहिए और यमुना देवी का पूजन करना चाहिए। जो भी प्राणी इस दिन यमुना जी में स्नान करता है , उसे काल का भय नहीं होता और उसके सारे कष्ट का निवारण हो जाता है । वह प्राणी मृत्यु के पश्चात यमलोक में नहीं जाता उसकी सद्गति होती है । 

कहते है – इसी दिन श्री कृष्ण भगवान ने नरकासुर का वध किया था और उसके वध के पश्चात श्रीकृष्ण अपनी बहन सुभद्रा के घर गए । सुभद्रा ने अपने भाई श्री कृष्ण को तिलक लगाकर आरती की और उनका बहुत ही आतिथ्य सत्कार किया ।

इस दिन शाम के समय यम के नाम से घर के बाहर चहुमुखी दीया जलाना चाहिए ।

कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की त्रयोदशी को धनवंतरी देवता का जन्म हुआ था । शरद पूर्णिमा के दिन चंद्रमा का , कार्तिक मास की कृष्ण पक्ष की द्वादशी को कामधेनु गाय का, त्रयोदशी को भगवान धनवंतरी का , चतुर्दशी को काली माता का और अमावस्या को महालक्ष्मी माता का समुद्र मंथन से प्रादुर्भाव  हुआ था । देवता और दानव के द्वारा किए गए समुद्र मंथन से धन्वंतरी देवता अमृत का कलश हाथ में लिए उत्पन्न हुए थे । 

धन्वंतरी देवता को आयुर्वेद का जन्मदाता और देवताओं का चिकित्सक माना जाता है । भगवान विष्णु के 24 अवतारों में से 12 वा अवतार धन्वंतरी देवता का था । 

धनतेरस के दिन चांदी का खरीदना शुभ माना जाता है । 

धनतेरस के दिन संध्या काल में यमराज के नाम का दीपक भी जलाया जाता है । यह दीपक होने वाले अनिष्ट को समाप्त करता है । साल में एक बार इस दिन यमराज जी की पूजा की जाती है । इनकी पूजा करने से अकाल मृत्यु नहीं होती है । 

इसके पीछे एक पौराणिक कथा भी है ।

कथा के अनुसार  – एक हिम नाम का राजा था । उनके घर एक पुत्र का जन्म हुआ । ज्योतिषियों ने कुंडली बनाई । कुंडली के अनुसार उसमें लिखा था – कि राजकुमार की मृत्यु विवाह के चौथे दिन ही हो जाएगी । यह सुनकर राजा और रानी बहुत ही दुखी हुए । समय बीतता गया । राजकुमार का विवाह हो गया । विवाह के बाद चौथा दिन भी आ गया । सबके मन में भय उत्पन्न हो रहा था । किंतु राजकुमार की पत्नी चिंता मुक्त थी ।  उसके मन में किसी भी प्रकार का भय नहीं था । क्योंकि वह महालक्ष्मी की भक्त थी । उसे माता लक्ष्मी पर पूरा विश्वास था । शाम के समय राजकुमार की पत्नी ने सारा महल दीपों से सजा दिया । और माता लक्ष्मी के भजन गाने लगी । यमदूत जब राजकुमार के प्राण लेने आए तो उसकी पत्नी की भक्ति की शक्ति से यमदूत महल में प्रवेश न कर सके और वापस लौट गए । फिर बाद में यमराज ने सर्प का रूप धारण करके महल में प्रवेश किया । जब उस सर्प ने राजकुमार के कक्ष में प्रवेश किया ।  तो दीपों की जयमाला की रोशनी और मां लक्ष्मी की कृपा से उसकी आंखें चौंधिया गई थी । राजकुमार और राजकुमार की पत्नी दोनों महालक्ष्मी माता के भजन गा रहे थे । सर्प बने यमराज भी उनके पास बैठ गए । यमराज उन दोनों के भजन में ऐसे खोए कि उन्हें पता नहीं चला कि सुबह कब हो गई । राजकुमार की मृत्यु का समय जा चुका था । तब यमराज ने अपना असली रूप धारण किया । यमराज ने राजकुमार को दीर्घायु होने का आशीर्वाद दिया ।और कहा कि जो कार्तिक कृष्ण पक्ष की त्रयोदशी को शाम के समय  सरसों के तेल का दीपक जलाकर  मेरा स्मरण करेगा , उसकी कभी अकाल मृत्यु नहीं होगी । 

कहते हैं उसी दिन से धनतेरस के दिन शाम के समय दीपक जलाने की परंपरा शुरू हुई । इसे  "यम दिवा  "यानी यम का दीपक भी कहते हैं ।  दीपक को घर के बाहर  दक्षिण दिशा की ओर मुख करके रखना चाहिए ।

Dhanvantari Devta was born on the Trayodashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. On the day of Sharad Purnima, Moon was born, on Dwadashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month Kamdhenu cow, Trayodashi of Lord Dhanvantari, Chaturdashi of Kali Mata and Amavasya of Mahalakshmi Mata emerged from the ocean churning. Due to the churning of the ocean by the gods and demons, the god Dhanvantari was born with a pot of nectar in his hand.

The god Dhanvantari is considered to be the originator of Ayurveda and the physician of the gods. Out of the 24 incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the 12th incarnation was that of the god Dhanvantari.

Buying silver on the day of Dhanteras is considered auspicious.

A lamp in the name of Yamraj is also lit in the evening on the day of Dhanteras. This lamp eliminates the evil. Yamraj ji is worshiped once in a year on this day. Worshiping them does not lead to premature death.

There is also a legend behind it.

According to the legend – there was a king named Him. A son was born to them. Astrologers made horoscopes. According to the horoscope, it was written in it that the prince would die on the fourth day of marriage. Hearing this, the king and queen were very sad. Time passed by . The prince got married. The fourth day also came after the marriage. Fear was rising in everyone's mind. But the prince's wife was worry free. There was no fear in his mind. Because she was a devotee of Mahalakshmi. He had full faith in Mata Lakshmi. In the evening, the prince's wife decorated the whole palace with lamps. And started singing bhajans of Mata Lakshmi. When the eunuchs came to take the prince's life, the eunuchs could not enter the palace due to the devotion of his wife and returned. Then later Yamraj took the form of a snake and entered the palace. When that snake entered the prince's room. So his eyes were dazzled by the light of the garland of lamps and the grace of Maa Lakshmi. Both the prince and the prince's wife were singing hymns to Mahalakshmi Mata. Yamraj, who became a snake, also sat beside him. Yamraj was so lost in the hymns of both of them that he did not know when it was morning. The time of the death of the prince had passed. Then Yamraj assumed his true form. Yamraj blessed the prince with a long life. And said that whoever remembers me by lighting a mustard oil lamp in the evening on the Trayodashi of Kartik Krishna Paksha, he will never die prematurely.

It is said that from that day the tradition of lighting lamps in the evening on the day of Dhanteras started. It is also called "Yama Diva" i.e. Yama's lamp. The lamp should be kept outside the house facing south.

कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की त्रयोदशी को धनतेरस का त्यौहार बड़ी श्रद्धा के साथ मनाया जाता है । 

एक पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार  – एक समय भगवान विष्णु पृथ्वी लोक पर भ्रमण करने के लिए निकले । तब माता लक्ष्मी ने भी उनके साथ चलने का आग्रह किया ।  भगवान विष्णु बोले कि –  देवी , अगर आप पृथ्वी पर जाकर , जैसा मैं कहूं ऐसा ही करो , तब आप मेरे साथ चल सकती हो । माता लक्ष्मी ने कहा –  ठीक है स्वामी जैसा आप कहेंगे, मैं वैसा ही करूंगी । तब विष्णु भगवान और माता लक्ष्मी पृथ्वी लोक पर आकर भ्रमण करने लगे । कुछ देर पश्चात विष्णु भगवान ने माता लक्ष्मी से कहा कि – देवी , आप जरा यहां पर रुको । जब तक मैं ना आ जाऊं तब तक आप यहां से कहीं मत जाना । माता लक्ष्मी ने कहा – ठीक है , स्वामी आप जाइए।  विष्णु भगवान दक्षिण दिशा की ओर चल पड़े । देवी लक्ष्मी के मन में एकाएक विचार आया कि – भगवान विष्णु मुझे अपने साथ क्यों नहीं ले कर गए । उन्होंने मुझे यहां रुकने को क्यों कहा ?  उनका मन नहीं माना और वे विष्णु भगवान के पीछे पीछे चल पड़ी । माता लक्ष्मी ने देखा कि एक जगह पर सरसों के खेत में सुंदर फूल लगे हुए हैं । उन फूलों को देखकर माता का मन आकर्षित हो गया और उन्होंने फूलों को तोड़ कर अपना श्रृंगार किया । इसके बाद वे आगे चल पड़ी । आगे चलकर माता लक्ष्मी को एक गन्ने का खेत दिखाई दिया । तब माता लक्ष्मी ने गन्ने तोड़े और  उन्हें चूसने लगी ।

ऐसा करते हुए विष्णु भगवान ने माता लक्ष्मी को देख लिया और उन पर क्रोधित हो गए । भगवान विष्णु क्रोधित होकर बोले  कि –  देवी तुम मेरे मना करने पर भी मेरे पीछे-पीछे यहां तक आ गई हो । और किसान के खेतों में आपने चोरी का दंडनीय अपराध किया है । मैं आपको श्राप देता हूं कि आप 12 साल तक इस किसान के घर में ही रहकर अपना अपराध भोगोगी। ऐसा कहकर विष्णु भगवान  बैकुंठ लोक में चले गए  । माता लक्ष्मी वही किसान के घर में रह गई । किसान बहुत ही गरीब था । एक दिन माता लक्ष्मी ने किसान की पत्नी से कहा कि पहले तुम नहा धोकर मेरी इस बनाई गई मिट्टी की मूर्ति की पूजा करो । फिर जाकर बाद में रसोई बनाना । ऐसा करने से तुम्हे जो चाहिए वहीं मिलेगा । किसान की पत्नी ने ऐसा ही किया । लक्ष्मी जी की कृपा के कारण किसान का घर थोड़े ही दिन में अन्न और धन-धान्य से परिपूर्ण हो गया । किसान के वे 12 वर्ष बहुत ही आनंद से बीते ।  विष्णु भगवान 12 वर्ष के बाद लक्ष्मी माता को लेने के लिए आए । किसान माता लक्ष्मी को जाने से रोकने लगा ।  तब विष्णु भगवान बोले कि – यह तो चंचला है , इन्हें कौन रोक सकता है ? ये कहीं पर भी एक जगह नहीं ठहरती । यह तो इन्हें मेरा श्राप था जो तुम्हारे घर में 12 वर्ष तक रह रही थी । अब इनके श्राप की अवधि पूरी हो गई है । इसलिए अब ये जा रही है । लेकिन किसान  माता लक्ष्मी को बार-बार जाने से रोक रहा था और उनसे विनय पूर्वक निवेदन कर रहा था ।

माता लक्ष्मी को किसान पर दया आ गई और कहां कि – ठीक है , अगर तुम मुझे रोकना चाहते हो , तो जैसा मैं कहती हूं , ऐसा ही करो । कल धनतेरस है । कल घर को अच्छी तरह से लीप कर साफ सफाई करना। रात्रि में घी का दिया जलाना और संध्या काल में मेरी पूजा करना । एक तांबे के कलश में रूपए भर कर रखना । मैं उस कलश में निवास करूंगी । लेकिन जब तुम मेरी पूजा करोगे , तब मैं तुम्हें दिखाई नहीं दूंगी । तुम्हारी की गई इस एक दिन की पूजा से मैं वर्ष भर तक तुम्हारे घर में निवास करूंगी । यह कहकर मां लक्ष्मी और भगवान विष्णु  दीपक के प्रकाश के साथ चारों दिशाओं में फैल गए । अगले दिन धनतेरस के दिन किसान ने माता लक्ष्मी के कहे अनुसार पूजन किया । किसान का घर सुख-समृद्धि और धन-धान्य से भर गया इसी कारण धनतेरस के दिन लक्ष्मी जी की पूजा की जाती है ।

According to a legend – once upon a time Lord Vishnu went out to visit the earth. Then Mata Lakshmi also requested to accompany him. Lord Vishnu said that - Goddess, if you go to earth and do as I say, then you can walk with me. Mata Lakshmi said - Well lord, I will do as you say. Then Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi came and started traveling on the earth. After some time Lord Vishnu told Mother Lakshmi that – Goddess, you just stay here. You don't go anywhere from here until I come. Mata Lakshmi said - Alright, lord you go. Lord Vishnu walked towards the south. A sudden thought came in the mind of Goddess Lakshmi that - why did Lord Vishnu not take me with him. Why did he ask me to stay here? Her mind did not obey and she followed Lord Vishnu. Mata Lakshmi saw that there are beautiful flowers in a mustard field at one place. Seeing those flowers, the mind of the mother was attracted and she plucked the flowers and did her makeup. After that they went ahead. Later, Mata Lakshmi saw a sugarcane field. Then Mata Lakshmi plucked the sugarcane and started sucking them.

While doing this Lord Vishnu saw Goddess Lakshmi and got angry on her. Lord Vishnu got angry and said that - Goddess, you have come here after me even after my refusal. And you have committed the punishable offense of theft in the farmer's fields. I curse you that you will suffer your crime by staying in this farmer's house for 12 years. Saying this Lord Vishnu went to Baikunth Lok. Mata Lakshmi stayed in the same farmer's house. The farmer was very poor. One day Mata Lakshmi told the farmer's wife that first you should wash your bath and worship this clay idol made by me. Then go and cook the kitchen later. By doing this you will get what you want. The farmer's wife did the same. Due to the grace of Lakshmi ji, the farmer's house became full of food and money in a few days. Those 12 years of farmer were spent very happily. Lord Vishnu came after 12 years to take Lakshmi Mata. The farmer started stopping Mata Lakshmi from going. Then Lord Vishnu said that - this is fickle, who can stop them? It does not stay in one place anywhere. This was my curse to him who was staying in your house for 12 years. Now their curse period is over. So now it is going. But the farmer was stopping Mata Lakshmi from going again and again and was requesting her graciously.

Mata Lakshmi took pity on the farmer and where - well, if you want to stop me, then do as I say. Tomorrow is Dhanteras. Tomorrow clean the house thoroughly by leaps and bounds. Lighting a lamp of ghee in the night and worshiping me in the evening. Keep money in a copper urn. I will reside in that Kalash. But when you worship me, then I will not be visible to you. With this one day worship done by you, I will live in your house for a whole year. Saying this Maa Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu spread in all four directions with the light of the lamp. The next day, on the day of Dhanteras, the farmer worshiped according to the instructions of Mata Lakshmi. The farmer's house was filled with happiness, prosperity and wealth, that is why Lakshmi is worshiped on the day of Dhanteras.

 कार्तिक मास की कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी को रमा एकादशी कहते हैं । यह एकादशी करने से बड़े-बड़े पापों का नाश हो जाता है । भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर से इस एकादशी का महत्व बताते हुए कहा कि  –

हे राजन ! प्राचीन काल में मुचुकुंद नाम का एक राजा था । वह बहुत ही धर्मात्मा और न्याय प्रिय था । मुचुकुंद राजा बहुत बड़े विष्णु भक्त थे । राजा के धर्म पालक और न्याय प्रिय होने के कारण देवराज इंद्र और अन्य सभी देवता भी उनका बहुत सम्मान करते थे । राजा की एक पुत्री थी । उसका नाम चंद्रभागा था । राजा ने अपनी पुत्री का विवाह चंद्रसेन राजा के पुत्र शोभन के साथ किया था । शोभन शारीरिक रूप से बहुत ही दुर्बल थे । एक बार शोभन अपनी पत्नी चंद्रभागा के साथ अपनी ससुराल आए हुए थे । उन्हीं दिनों कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की रमा एकादशी भी आने वाली थी । एकादशी के व्रत से कुछ दिन पहले चंद्रभागा के मन में अत्यन्त सोच उत्पन्न हो गया कि मेरे पति एकादशी का व्रत कैसे करेंगे ? वे तो शरीर से बहुत ही कमजोर है । क्योंकि मेरे पिता एकादशी के दिन किसी को भी भोजन ग्रहण नहीं करने देते  । मुचुकुंद राजा ने दशमी के दिन सारे नगर में ढोल बजवा कर घोषणा करवा दी कि कल एकादशी को कोई भी भोजन ग्रहण नहीं करेगा । घोषणा के सुनते ही शोभन के मन में चिंता उत्पन्न हो गई कि वह कैसे एक दिन बिना भोजन के रहेंगे । शोभन ने अपनी पत्नी से कहा कि – तुम तो जानती हो , मैं एक समय भी बिना भोजन के नहीं रह सकता ।  तो फिर कल मैं एकादशी के दिन कैसे बिना भोजन के रहूंगा । ऐसे तो मेरे प्राण ही चले जाएंगे । पत्नी ने कहा –  स्वामी !  मेरे पिता का आदेश बहुत ही कठोर है । वह अपने राज्य में एकादशी के दिन किसी को भी भोजन ग्रहण नहीं करने देते । हमारे राज्य में गाय , घोड़ा , हाथी , बिल्ली आदि जीव – जंतु घास और जल नहीं ग्रहण कर सकते , तो फिर मनुष्य की तो बात ही क्या है । अगर आपको कल एकादशी को भोजन करना है , तो आप यहां से किसी दूसरे राज्य या फिर दूसरे स्थान पर चले जाना । तभी आपका भोजन ग्रहण करना संभव हो सकता है  । अन्यथा मेरे पिता के राज में ऐसा होना संभव नहीं है । शोभन ने कहा –  नहीं , मैं तुम्हें छोड़कर कहीं नहीं जाऊंगा । यदि कल तुम भी व्रत करोगी , तो मैं भी तुम्हारे साथ व्रत करूंगा । जो होगा देखा जाएगा । अगले दिन शोभन ने एकादशी का व्रत रखा । वह भूख से सारा दिन बहुत ही व्याकुल रहा । जब सूर्य नारायण अस्त हो गए । रात्रि में जागरण का समय आया , तो सब भक्त जन खुशी-खुशी जागरण करने लगे और भगवान विष्णु के नाम का जप करने लगे । परंतु शोभन के लिए यह सब बहुत ही दुखदाई था । अगले दिन प्रातः काल में ही शोभन की मृत्यु हो गई । राजा ने शोभन का अंतिम संस्कार किया । उसकी पुत्री चंद्रभागा भी उसके साथ सती होना चाहती थी । किंतु उसके पिता ने उसे सती नहीं होने दिया । अपने पिता की आज्ञा मानकर वह सती नहीं हुई  ।और अपने पति की मृत्यु के बाद अपने पिता के घर में ही रहने लगी । शोभन ने रमा एकादशी का व्रत किया था । इसी कारण शोभन को मृत्यु के बाद  मंदराचल पर्वत पर एक बहुत ही वैभवशाली और धन-धान्य से संपूर्ण देवपुर की प्राप्ति हुई । वह नगर स्वर्ण के खंभों से बना हुआ था । उस नगर के भवन मणियों और रत्नों से जड़े हुए थे । उस नगर में स्वर्ग की तरह सारी सुख सुविधाएं उपलब्ध थी । और शोभन उस रत्न जड़ित सिंहासन पर बैठा हुआ ऐसा लगता था जैसे कि दूसरा इंद्र ही विराजमान हो । समय बीतता गया । एक समय में मुचुकुंद राजा के नगर का ही सोम शर्मा नाम का ब्राह्मण तीर्थ यात्रा पर निकला । और घूमते – घूमते मंदराचल पर्वत पर उसी देवपुर नगर में गया । उसने वहां पर शोभन को देखकर पहचान लिया और सोचा कि यह तो मुचुकुंद राजा का दामाद है । शोभन ने भी उन ब्राह्मण को पहचान कर प्रणाम किया , और सबकी कुशल मंगल पूछी । ब्राह्मण ने राजा मुचुकुंद और चंद्रभागा  की कुशल मंगल बताई । परंतु ब्राह्मण ने शोभन से पूछा कि – राजन तुम्हें यह अदभुत दिव्य भवन जैसा नगर कैसे प्राप्त हुआ है ?  यह तो ऐसा लग रहा है जैसे मानो दूसरा स्वर्ग ही हो ।  तब शोभन ने कहा कि – मैंने रमा एकादशी का व्रत किया था । उसी के पुण्य से मुझे यह स्वर्ग के जैसा देवपुर प्राप्त हुआ है । परंतु यह नगर स्थिर नहीं है । यह अस्थिर है । तब ब्राह्मण ने पूछा – ऐसा क्यों ? तब शोभन ने कहा कि – मैंने रमा एकादशी का व्रत श्रद्धा भाव के बिना किया था । मुझे मजबूरी में वह व्रत रखना पड़ा । इसी वजह से मेरा यह नगर अस्थिर है । यदि आप राजा मुचुकुंद और मेरी पत्नी को यह बात बता दे , तो हो सकता है कि वे कुछ ऐसा उपाय करें कि मेरा यह नगर स्थिर हो जाए । तब ब्राह्मण ने वापस जा कर यह बात राजा मुचुकुंद और चंद्रभागा को बताई कि – चंद्रभागा आपके पति मंदराचल पर्वत पर एक देवतुल्य नगर में विराजमान है । चंद्रभागा को ब्राह्मण की बात पर विश्वास नहीं हुआ और वह बोली कि –  ब्राह्मण देव , कही आपने कोई स्वपन तो नहीं देखा ?  मेरे पति की तो मृत्यु हो चुकी है । तब ब्राह्मण देव बोले कि – नहीं  पुत्री , मैंने प्रत्यक्ष ही तुम्हारे पति को देखा है और उन्होंने ही मुझे यह सारा वृत्तांत तुम्हें सुनाने को कहा था । तब चंद्रभागा बोली कि –  हे ब्राह्मण देव , आप मुझे कृपया करके उस स्थान पर लेकर चलिए जहां मेरे पति हैं । मैं अपने पति से मिलना चाहती हूं । यदि आप मुझे मेरे पति के दर्शन करा दे तो मैं आपकी बहुत ही आभारी रहूंगी । तब ब्राह्मण देव चंद्रभागा को लेकर मंदराचल पर्वत पर गए । मंदराचल पर्वत के पास ही वामदेव ऋषि का आश्रम था । तब चंद्रभागा और ब्राह्मण ने सारी बात वामदेव ऋषि को बताई । तो वामदेव ऋषि ने अपने मंत्र के उच्चारण से और एकादशी के व्रत के पुण्य के प्रभाव से चंद्रभागा का शरीर दिव्य कर दिया। और चंद्रभागा को दिव्य गति प्राप्त हुई । तब वह अपने पति से मिलने के लिए उस देवपुर नगर में पहुंची । अपनी पत्नी को आते देख कर शोभन बहुत ही खुश हुआ और उसने उसे अपने सिंहासन पर बाई तरफ बैठाया । तब चंद्रभागा ने कहा कि –  स्वामी ! आप मेरे एकादशी व्रत के पुण्य को ग्रहण कीजिए । क्योंकि मैं अपने पिता के घर में  8 वर्ष की आयु से ही एकादशी का व्रत करते आ रही हूं । मैं आपको अपने सारे पुण्य प्रदान करती हूं । जिससे आपका यह नगर स्थिर हो जाएगा और इसे कोई भी देव या दानव जीत नहीं सकेगा  । यह नगर प्रलय के अंत तक रहेगा । तब चंद्रभागा अपने पति के साथ उस नगर में आराम से सुखदायक जीवन व्यतीत करने लगी ।

तब श्री कृष्ण ने धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर से कहा कि –हे धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर यह व्रत समस्त पापों का नाश कर देता है । इस एकादशी के व्रत करने से ब्रह्महत्या का पाप भी नष्ट हो जाता है । कृष्ण पक्ष और शुक्ल पक्ष में आने वाली दोनों एकादशी का फल एक समान होता है । इनमें कोई भी अंतर नहीं होता । जो भी भक्तजन इस महात्म्य को सुनते हैं वह अंत में समस्त पापों से छूट कर विष्णु लोक को प्राप्त होते हैं ।

Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month is called Rama Ekadashi. By observing this Ekadashi, great sins are destroyed. Describing the importance of this Ekadashi, Lord Krishna told Dharmaraja Yudhishthira that –

Hey Rajan! In ancient times there was a king named Muchukunda. He was very pious and justice loving. Muchukunda Raja was a great devotee of Vishnu. Devraj Indra and all the other gods also respected him very much because of the king's righteous and justice-loving. The king had a daughter. Her name was Chandrabhaga. The king had married his daughter to Shobhan, the son of Chandrasen Raja. Shobhan was physically very weak. Once Shobhan was visiting his in-laws' house with his wife Chandrabhaga. At the same time, Rama Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month was also going to come. A few days before the Ekadashi fast, a lot of thought arose in Chandrabhaga's mind that how will my husband observe the Ekadashi fast? He is very weak in body. Because my father does not allow anyone to take food on Ekadashi. Muchukunda king made an announcement by playing drums in the whole city on the day of Dashami that no one would take any food on Ekadashi tomorrow. On hearing the announcement, Shobhan was worried about how he would go without food for a day. Shobhan told his wife that – You know, I cannot live without food even for a single time. Then how will I be without food tomorrow on Ekadashi? In this way my life will be gone. The wife said - Swami! My father's order is very strict. He does not allow anyone to take food on the day of Ekadashi in his kingdom. In our state, animals like cow, horse, elephant, cat etc. cannot take grass and water, so what is the matter of human beings. If you have to eat on Ekadashi tomorrow, then you have to move from here to another state or to another place. Only then can it be possible to take your food. Otherwise it would not have been possible under my father's rule. Shobhan said – No, I will not go anywhere except you. If tomorrow you will also fast, then I will also fast with you. will be seen what happens . The next day Shobhan observed Ekadashi fast. He was very disturbed the whole day with hunger. When Surya Narayana set. When the time of awakening came in the night, then all the devotees started awakening happily and started chanting the name of Lord Vishnu. But it was all very sad for Shobhan. Shobhan died the next day early in the morning. The king performed the last rites of Shobhan. His daughter Chandrabhaga also wanted to do sati with him. But her father did not allow her to commit sati. By following her father's orders, she did not commit sati. And after the death of her husband, she started living in her father's house. Shobhan observed Rama Ekadashi fast. For this reason Shobhan got a very splendid and full of wealth Devpur after his death on the Mandarachal mountain. The city was built with pillars of gold. The buildings of that city were studded with gems and gems. All the amenities were available in that city like heaven. And Shobhan, sitting on that gem-studded throne, looked as if another Indra was sitting there. Time passed by . Once upon a time a Brahmin named Som Sharma from the town of Muchukund Raja went on a pilgrimage. And roaming around, he went to the same Devpur city on the Mandarachal mountain. He recognized Shobhan there and thought that it was Muchukunda Raja's son-in-law. Shobhan also recognized those Brahmins and bowed down, and asked everyone's well-being. The Brahmin told the well-being of King Muchukunda and Chandrabhaga. But the brahmin asked Shobhan that - Rajan, how have you got this wonderful divine building-like city? It is as if there is another heaven. Then Shobhan said that – I had fasted on Rama Ekadashi. By virtue of that I have got this heaven-like Devpur. But this city is not stable. It is unstable. Then the brahmin asked - why so? Then Shobhan said that – I had fasted Rama Ekadashi without devotion. I had to keep that fast under compulsion. For this reason this city of mine is unstable. If you tell this to King Muchukunda and my wife, they may take some measures to make this city of mine stable. Then the Brahmin went back and told this to King Muchukunda and Chandrabhaga that – Chandrabhaga, your husband, is sitting in a godlike city on the Mandarachal mountain. Chandrabhaga did not believe the words of the Brahmin and she said that - Brahmin God, have you not seen any dream? My husband has already died. Then the Brahmin Dev said - No daughter, I have seen your husband directly and he had asked me to narrate the whole story to you. Then Chandrabhaga said - O Brahmin god, please take me to the place where my husband is. I want to meet my husband. I will be very grateful to you if you can take me to see my husband. Then the Brahmin god took Chandrabhaga to the Mandarachal mountain. Vamdev Rishi had an ashram near Mandarachal mountain. Then Chandrabhaga and the Brahmin told the whole thing to Vamdev Rishi. So Vamdev sage made Chandrabhaga's body divine by the recitation of his mantra and by virtue of the virtue of fasting on Ekadashi. And Chandrabhaga got divine speed. Then she reached that Devpur city to meet her husband. your wife Seeing Ni coming, Shobhan was very happy and he made her sit on his throne on the left side. Then Chandrabhaga said - Swami! You accept the virtue of my Ekadashi fast. Because I have been observing Ekadashi fast since the age of 8 in my father's house. I give you all my virtues. Due to which this city of yours will be stable and no god or demon will be able to conquer it. This city will remain till the end of the Holocaust. Then Chandrabhaga along with her husband started living a comfortable life in that city.

Then Shri Krishna told Dharmaraja Yudhishthira that – O Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, this fast destroys all sins. By observing this Ekadashi fast, the sin of killing Brahma is also destroyed. The results of both Ekadashi falling in Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha are same. There is no difference between them. All the devotees who listen to this greatness, in the end, freed from all sins, they reach the world of Vishnu.
